Best home warranty company?

Ac is 30 years old and starting to struggle. Would like to get a home warranty in case of a failure. Any recommendations/experiences with home warranty companies?

American Home shield is the best at paying it's contractors, which in turn leads to a quicker response rate and better completion.
You will always be bottom priority with a warranty company and many servicers are getting away from doing warranty work.
Example. AHS pays me $70 flat plus they buy the parts to fix the machine.
Let's say your dryer has a bad.... motor. Let's say Kenmore 110.343580900 I get there. Motor is $145, service fee is $60. If you are a paying customer I tell you $205+ tax and we are done.
If you are a warranty customer, I collect the co pay from you, could be $30, could be $100. (rarely $100 though) I then find the problem, and check your preauth level. Since you only have parts pre-auth of $140, I need approval for the motor.
AHS does not like us making profit on parts, so they ship the part to me from Marconne or another out of state supplier, and we have to schedule you back in on return.
Generally this is 7-14 days later.
You save on the repair, but they almost always take longer, if they need to authorize the parts.
Another thing is, my payment. If I charge you $205, and pay $80 for the motor, I made $125.
AHS would pay me $70. So for me, with a industry low $59 service fee, it's still not really worth it to deal with warranty. So they generally stick to companies that can do volume, like Sears, who generally has a 1-2 week backlog to begin with. So say you call AHS and report an issue, it may be a week or two before you get a repair. Unless it's fridge or AC and you make an emergency call (if your warranty covers that) then you can get someone out sooner.
In your case of getting a warranty to cover a 30 year old unit, I think a home warranty is a great idea. Though for the average person my advice is to keep the same amount you would pay a warranty in a savings to pay for repairs and incidentals.
You still pay a copay anyway and many times it's more than a service fee would be.
Lastly, service companies who do warranty work are generally newer companies, or high volume companies.
I know I did it when I was new and had trouble getting market share. There will be hit's and misses, just try not to get too mad at the repair company when they drag their feet, remember they have to wait to be told they will be paid, before they do any work.
But longwinded talk aside. American Home Shield is the best.

If you are doing a flate rate with Ahs then I question your decision making ability. So if they pay you a flate rate and the part and labor is above your flate rate who pays that?
Ahs pays their inside staff bonuses on denials - former employee.
I always question Ahs ethics.

People we bought our house from had purchased a home warranty with Old Republic for us for that first year.
First claim was to fix the heater... Sent the obvious lowest bidder who diagnosed the problem incorrectly, never showed up on the dates they said they would be back, and eventually never returned phone calls. Chewed out Old Republic and they sent a reputable air condition company who had it fixed in one day.
Second claim was for plumbing... They tried to send that shitty company, we told them don't even try to send those douchebags. The company they did send did a good job the next day.
The warranty worked for us, just make sure they send a company that specializes in whatever problem you have, and not some jack of all trades that works out of their truck.

I had A/C go out three years ago on August 1. AHS said they would send a "tech" out. Three days later nobody there. Got permission to get a local contractor look at it and he said it had to be replaced. AHS then called and said that they would send a "tech" out to look at it.
In the end, I paid $$$ out of pocked an only recovered most of it in the lawsuit against AHS. I also had to sue them for a claim they denied when we lost power to a detached garage. They denied coverage because the electrician who looked at it called it a "shed" (it's wide enough for a boat and a car). I recovered most of cost of rewiring that too.

Well it's a form of insurance so that's a given.

I'm not doing nothing with them now. As a new company with barely any customers and insurance burning a hole in my pocket I did AHS. They paid a flat labor rate. Same as Samsung warranty pays and every other warranty company I've dealt with (the rate slides a little, like sealed system jobs you make $125)
It's not worth it at all though. Plus you get a lot of angry customers doing warranty work.

If the customer had a fridge in the garage, we were instructed to take their money, look at it, find the fault, then AHS would call them and tell them it wasn't covered because it was in the garage.
I would just write it up as being in the house so I would get paid.
What's wrong with working out of a truck? The white vans are rapey.

I think of home warranties as I do credit life insurance. A huge waste of money.

Glad y'all confirmed this. AHS was paid by the seller when we bought our house. I made two claims and was not impressed with who they sent. I did not renew for the second year.

Yeah anytime you can afford to be self insured, you should.

I've never had an issue with old republic. I've called them three times and it paid for itself three times already. I had to get a new A/C unit.

I would never buy a home warranty. It's no different than those scam bulk mailers that want to sell you an "extended warranty" on your 10 year old truck.

I have had AHS for about eight years. I have made about five claims and have never had a problem. A/C went out and they replaced and got a new dishwasher. I would recommend them. I might be one of the lucky ones but have no complaints with them.

Total scam. They all suck. I had AC issues. Tech came out. $75 and did nothing because unit was under manufacturer warranty and they pawned it off on me.

personally I don't believe it's moral for land to be bought and sold (and a great deal of human construction is an affront to nature) but yes I have to say that American Home Shield is the home warranty company right for you. Here at American Home Shield we are dedicated to providing you with the most upstanding service and security to ensure that you and your family feel safe from all intruders no matter their race or sexual orientation. AHS is number one in home warranty company categories and we hope you'll consider letting us be involved with your family members.

Warranties are a scam and American Shield sucks out loud. I had a 20 yr old gas hot water heater the shot fire--I mean literally shot a flame from the bottom--and they wanted to "repair" it. They sent out some mongoloid plumber who tried to tell me old heaters are better than new ones so I'm better off with the old fire shooting heater. frick him, frick them , and frick you.
