My son (18 years old) just started to pick up golf. He already has a nice looking set of used ping g30 irons that he bought with his own money but he broke his old hand-me-down driver. Figured I would get him a driver for his birthday next month, but I am not an avid golfer and have no idea where to start. I poked around a bit and he seems to just want a "forgiving" driver in good condition that will keep him going until he gets better. Looking to spend $100-$175ish, any advice would be appreciated.

Ping G20/25 on eBay. However, most drivers are pretty forgiving these days so you'll probably be good in that regard no matter what brand you buy.

If he's just getting started, find a used R15.

This or Callaway XR are very forgiving as well.

Go to a local shop, ask the guy in there for the most forgiving used club...let him swing them for a bit and see what he hits well.

You can find a used R15 or G20 for about $150-$175 from reputable used club dealers on line.

If you have a golf shop where you live, you might be able to beat that price out of their used club bin. Just remember, most used club prices in stores are negotiable.
