i bought a new boat and i want to upgrade the trolling motor from a 12v to a 24v. there are two wires running from the batteries in the back of the boat to a 2 prong plug in the front of the boat. do i need to buy a 3-prong plug and run a 3rd wire (which would almost be impossible)?

a friend of mine mentioned i didnt need another wire or plug if i ran the two batteries in a series. anyone know if this is true?

That is correct. Come off the positive on one battery and the negative on the other. Jump the two remaining posts.

Am I reading this right? Are you trying to run your current 12v motor on 24v?

Yes. Wiring in a series will double the voltage.

I saw the word "upgrade" so I am hoping a replacement of the trolling motor.

You don't have to run another wire but you may have to pull bigger wire. I went from a 12V 40# to a 24V Tour 82#. I had to pull #6 and installed a 50A circuit breaker as close as I could to the battery.

Also, are you planning on installing a 3rd battery? You can do it with the cranking battery, as I know some who do, but I didn't and wouldn't recommend it.

When you decide on the trolling motor post it and I will help you with what you need. Also need to know what you have on there now.

Wire size and breaker/fuse will be determined by amps to run new motor.

I went from a 55 minn Kota to a 80lb I pilot. You can leave the plug the same just connect the two batteries as shown in the diagram above with some jumper wires. Be sure to put a 60 amp breaker in between.

From 55 to 70 your wire should be good as the pounds of thrust are close. More voltage, less amps in this case.
