Next Wednesday (6/22), the Metro Council will vote to approve or reject an assessment that is the first step in building an city-wide fiber network in Baton Rouge. This means every man, woman, and child could have high speed internet, dozens of providers to choose from, and ultimately faster speeds at lower prices.

Please go to support.batonrougefiber.com and submit the form to email your council member and ask them to vote "yes" on 6/22 to help bring fiber to Baton Rouge.

I don't live in Baton Rouge, but living in the BR area and being in BR often I do support this.

1) Why do I care about everyone else having high speed internet?

2) Children need to stay off the internet.

3) Who's going to pay for it?

The study is looking at 2 funding opportunities:

1) Leveraging the FCC eRate to build out backbone infrastructure to every K-12 public school in EBR.

2) Building a public-private partnership model where a private ISP like Google, Ting, Cox, AT&T, or EATEL enter into a shared risk model where the physical infrastructure is offset by private investment.

Also, it's important to note that the goal is an Open Access Network. Which means the city owns the infrastructure, but never offers services. Instead they lease out to multiple providers, so you as the consumer can pick from a dozen different ISPs, instead of one or two.

I live near Baton Rouge.. as in I am close to baton rouge and although I would support this, I don't have a councilman to contact to show my support for.

Economic development. Increased property value with an increased quality of life in the area.

2) Children need to stay off the internet.

This will do nothing to encourage and discourage children

hopefully the city

not everyone uses it for porn and TD. Businesses could use this as well as schools. Students who never had access could now have access to the wealth of knowledge on the internet

2) Children need to stay off the internet.
Again not everyone uses it for porn like you, there is a lot you can learn on the internet.

3) Who's going to pay for it?
Finally a reasonable question. Maybe its a tax making it all the more important to research. I would suggest cutting back on the police department and legal system..Literally trim the fat in those departments and put some of that money to this.

yes, and if it encourages tech company's to move to the area, reduces your internet and cable costs, provides a newer more reliable infrastructure then it will worth it. The tax dollars generated from the boost in tech. business in the area would help it to pay for itself.

1) The city wouldn't be spending millions, they'd be leveraging federal dollars and private investment.

2) As much as I'd love to wait around for a mythical thing to come along and make a real thing obsolete, we didn't move to fiber when it made copper wire inferior 20 years ago. There's no reason for me to believe that BR will jump on board with some new technology that doesn't even exist yet. This is real. We're 7 "yes" votes away from it.

anyone opposing this simply doesn't understand the technology or never wants to see tax dollars being spent

People like you are the reason BR stays behind the rest of the country.

Sometimes to improve the quality of life, property value, and living conditions for the whole city, you just may have to part with a few extra dollars in taxes.

Should we be subsidizing Internet for the poor people of the city? Heck no, but what they're proposing sounds like a win for all people. Faster speeds, more options...ATT & Cox have a corner on the market and are just awful. We need competition.

The goal is: not you.

The study is looking at multiple funding opportunities that are advantageous for the city. The big one is using a public-private partnership model where private investors or companies share the risk and offset the costs.

Another is leveraging the FCC's eRate where we can hav ethe federal government subsidize the deployment costs to every k-12 public school by up to 93.5%.
