Is Amtrak the way to go? Not renting a car. Anyone ever done this?

If not driving yourself, and assuming your hotel is in the downtown area, I recommend one of the following:

- Amtrak from Union Station to Milwaukee

or

- Megabus from Union Station (near it, at least) to Milwaukee
