I am getting someone a biscuit joiner for a Christmas gift.
I have never used one so I know next to nothing. It will be used for building furniture mostly.
Any recommendations?

Dewalt makes a good one. Home Depot has one for $169 at the moment with excellent reviews.

If you a true OT Baller get them a Festool Domino, otherwise all the majors do a pretty good job.

I bought a factory reconditioned ryobi from Amazon for $99 and it works great.

No idea. I eat biscuits one at a time like a normal.

I used to build tables for a living. I used them for about a year and realized you don't need them if you can keep the joints level. They offer almost zero strength. It's all about the glue.

Yes, but they work wonders at keeping joints level.

They help keep things level, but there is always a slight gap between the biscuit and the hole made for it.

explain...
also, here are some pictures that show how strong biscuit joints are compared to the surrounding wood on a table i built...

Like I said I have no use for one of those things but it's what I was asked to get for Christmas. I usually stick with Dewalt or Makita tools.

When the biscuit joiner makes the slot there is a little wiggle room for the biscuit, hence it not being perfectly level.
You can easily break a biscuit with your hand. If a project is glued up correctly, it won't break at the joint (if you try to break it), it will break elsewhere.
Nothing wrong with a biscuit joiner. They are fun. I was just throwing out there that they aren't really needed and don't add strength. The festool joiner will add strength, but not worth $700 when glue will suffice. I have mostly festool tools, and they are awesome. Thier circular saw with the track is a game changer. You can join stuff that a $50k 48" joiner can't do any better.
That being said, any biscuit joiner will work for your friend. I had a cheap royobi that I used hundreds of times without a problem.

I was considering this. I am pretty sure she has one by now though.
I just went to Lowe's on my lunch break and they didn't have any biscuit joiners in the damn store.

Buy him a nice Lie/Nielsen Block Plane or a good set of chisels.
Harbor Freight has a really good pocket hole jig for $60.

My commercial neighbor used to have one. He was the person who told me I was wasting my time with a biscuit joiner. He's probably been in the industry for 45 years.
Clamps aren't a fun present, but you can never have enough clamps.

NO shite on that, a set of 4 48" pipe clamps may be more beneficial.
