Shares of nutrition retailer GNC soared closed up over 24 percent Tuesday, on the heels of the company reporting quarterly earnings and revenue that beat Street estimates.

GNC announced Tuesday morning it had earnings of 35 cents on sales of $645 million for the first quarter of 2017, topping Thomson Reuters' estimates of 34 cents on revenue of $627 million.

Wasn't too long ago where most people said online supplement stores are going to shut these stores down.

Assuming one of the factors is their new pricing structure that went into effect around the start of the year. Lowered prices across the board to compete with online and got rid of the gold card.

Was the gold card a hindrance to success?

You can buy all GNC products online direct, from Amazon or many other online places.

Sports nutrition items don't have huge markups or profit gains (protein, pre workout, etc)

On the other hand, gnc THRIVES on sales of their "vitamins", sport vitamins, etc etc. people buy those like candy and the markup is a huge profit gainer.

Fwiw; I worked at gnc back in high school and saw price sheets. Those vita packs that can't stay on the shelves for longer than a week had a markup of about $40 EACH.

also, they're commission based. and believe it or not, the employees could care less about your health.

product A that i knew was a better product only had between a $1-$3 commission. product B on the other hand (GNC brand) had a $6-$8 commission. i always convinced customers to get GNC brand products because they made me the most money.

You asked, I told. You think everyone who sells you something honestly gives two shits about what you're buying unless it makes them money? Welcome to business.
