Perfume: The Story of a Murderer

I watched the movie last night after visiting a perfume museum and found it interesting, though I could tell it must have left out a good bit of back story. I want to read or listen to the book, but had a couple of questions for those who have read it.
1. How much background on his mother is in the book? There's little to none in the movie.
2. How much covers his childhood/upbringing?
I feel like these were the key things that were missing from the movie and I am hoping the book goes into more detail.
For anyone who as read the book and seen the movie, what are some other things the movie left out?
