A lot of people forget that game, but that was easily one of the most surprising upset wins we've ever had. Argentina was consistently one of the best teams in the world in the late 80s to early 90s, and US Soccer was really just getting the ball rolling again.

That was 1995, the ball was already rolling from 1994. There were some GREAT players for ARG, on the pitch that night Simeone, Abel Balbo, and the hottest player in football in those days, Gabriel "BatiGol" Batistuta.

Yeah, I was referring to the early 90s in general as getting the ball rolling again for US Soccer after 40 years in the cellar. Qualifying for Italia 90 was a huge deal, then hosting the World Cup in '94 solidified the growth of soccer in this country, allowing MLS to establish in '96.
I shudder to think where soccer might be in the US if Paul Caligiuri doesn't score that goal in Trinidad. We were in serious danger of having our World Cup taken away in '94 had we not qualified for Italia 90, and who knows what ripple effects that might have had. We'd eventually have gotten our shite together, but it might have taken another decade. Canada hasn't made a World Cup since 1986, for comparison.
That Argentina team we beat that day was loaded. That upset is definitely up there with 2009 Spain and even 1950 England in US Soccer history. Our win in 1950 is still considered one of the biggest upsets ever, as we somehow beat a fully professional England team with a bunch of college kids.
