B'ham folks, are y'all aware of the announcement tomorrow afternoon at Good People brewing? Looks like the long rumored USL team is finally here

Hey, good for them. I might be able to swing a few matches when they get that going.
Exciting to see markets in the South catching the fever.

Any rumors about potential stadium?

None that I've heard of really. Only thing that makes sense, but I've heard might not happen, is if they were to play on UAB's soccer field. I'd be totally down for that. UAB just redid that field/facility a year or two ago and it would be downtown instead of the middle of no where that the Hammers currently play.
ETA: I hope it is the Hammers brand that is carried over though. Based off of trends in other cities with expansions I have a feeling it won't be. But the Hammers have done a lot for sport in Birmingham and their logo/color scheme is cool so I would like to see it continue on.

so excited for this! A buddy of mine was talking yesterday about the possibility of them using UAB's new soccer field, but he said it only seats like 2100. I just don't think that's large enough for the future team. I think this will help propel the new stadium forward.

If the Barons owners are involved, I could see them using their stadium.

too much overlap in the season I would imagine to make that a real possibility. Although if they had a way to successfully convert it in a timely manor then maybe. We've seen what happens when you try and squeeze a soccer field into a baseball stadium (NYCFC) and it's not pretty.
*ETA* I just read an article stating they would start in the 2019 season. That should be more than enough time to figure out where to play / get a new stadium.

Not a traditional soccer fan, but I am excited for this. I think a stand alone soccer field downtown would be fun.

It's official! Team will begin playing in 2019.
As to where this leaves the Hammers, I'm not sure. The USL Birmingham page says...

Q: How does this affect the Birmingham Hammers — and what is your relationship with them?
A: The Birmingham Hammers organization has long been a vocal, volunteer, grassroots proponent of bringing pro soccer to Birmingham — and they’ve succeeded. Their passion and dedication to igniting local interest played an integral part in the selection of Magic City for a USL team.
The Hammers will now proudly be part of the USL Birmingham family, and they will be integral in determining the brand. They plan to play in the PDL next year and will launch the USL team for the 2019 season. This is an exciting time for all involved, and we look forward to seeing the various ways the Hammers’ members will be integrated into the new club moving forward.

Who are they/how are they connected to the city?

Barons I think.
ETA: correct me if I am wrong, but this might be the highest pro team the city has had, minus the Stallons I guess. Barons AA baseball is so boring.

He clearly made better life choices than I did.

Yea pretty much the highest. USL is basically the clear cut 2nd tier of soccer now so only one are below the MLS. More analogous to AAA baseball I guess.

What in the frick is wrong w/ minor league baseball? Great beer specials, cheap tickets, etc.
Minor league baseball is freaking awesome if you actually take advantage of it.

At least there has to be a winner at the end of every single professional baseball game.
