Match Day 9/1 - Qualifying and shiz

More qualifying today while I have a breakfast beer. Wheeeeeeeeeee
Earlier today, New Zealand crushed the Solomon Islands 6-1 in the first leg of the Oceania final on the back of a hatty by tSCUM legend Christopher Wood. The All Whites will be awaiting the fifth-place finisher in South America in November in a two-leg playoff.

Qualified Teams
Russia (hosts)
Brazil
Iran
Japan
CONCACAF - Matchday 7 of 10
USA - Costa Rica, 5:55 p.m. (ESPN)
Trinidad & Tobago - Honduras, 7 p.m. (beIN)
Mexico - Panama, 8:30 p.m. (FS2)
Assuming Mexico beats Panama tonight, the USA with a win can create some separation among the top 3, who automatically qualify. Separate match thread link above. Honduras needs a victory in Trinidad to stay in the hunt for the play-off spot.
UEFA - Matchday 7 of 10
Group C
Czech Republic - Germany, 1:45 p.m. (FS1)
Norway - Azerbaijan, 1:45 p.m. (ESPN3)
San Marino - Northern Ireland, 1:45 p.m. (FS+)
Germany perfect so far in qualifying and no reason to believe they'll have a problem against the Czechs today. All is on track for Germany to secure qualification in a few days' time. Northern Ireland can also just about wrap up second place in the group as they visit San Marino.
Group E
Kazakhstan - Montenegro, 11 a.m. (ESPN3)
Denmark - Poland, 1:45 p.m. (FS2)
Romania - Armenia, 1:45 p.m. (ESPN3)
A win for Poland in Copenhagen would put them in a commanding position to win Group E. The battle now appears to be for second place with Montenegro and Denmark both on 10 points entering today. Montenegro will not have an easy time in Kazakhstan, but they'll be hoping for a Polish win to create a gap to Denmark in third place.
Group F
Lithuania - Scotland, 1:45 p.m. (FS Match Pass)
Malta - England, 1:45 p.m. (ESPN3)
Slovakia - Slovenia, 1:45 p.m. (ESPN3)
Still relatively tight in Group F, but England can make strides today in Malta while Slovakia and Slovenia have a huge head-to-head match in the race for second place in the group. If that match ends in a draw, Scotland can jump back into the picture with a victory in Lithuania.
CAF - Matchday 3 of 6
Group A
Tunisia - DR Congo, 3 p.m. (beIN Connect 4)
The top two teams in Group A square off in what could well go toward deciding the automatic qualifier. DR Congo have not qualified for the World Cup since the Zaire days (1974) and Tunisia have missed out on the last two finals after making three straight from 1998 to 2006.
Group B
Nigeria - Cameroon, 11 a.m.
Relatively blockbuster game in Africa and Cameroon so badly need three points after drawing their opening games against Zambia and Algeria. The African champions open today four points adrift of Nigeria, and the Super Eagles can just about wrap up the group with victory today.
Group C
Morocco - Mali, 3 p.m.
Ivory Coast top the group and play Gabon tomorrow, so both Morocco and Mali will be jockeying for position today. Probably the most balanced of the five African qualifying groups, and this could come down to the final matchday based on current progress.
Group D
Cape Verde - South Africa, 1:30 p.m.
South Africa enter Matchday 3 behind Burkina Faso on goal difference, and Cape Verde have disappointed by losing their first two games despite vast improvements over the last couple of qualifying cycles. Nothing at all decided yet in this group and could look completely different by the end of tomorrow after Burkina Faso plays Senegal.
Group E
Ghana - Congo, 10:30 a.m.
Ghana need a victory to stay in the conversation in Group E after Uganda's win over Egypt yesterday left them on seven points from the first three games. If Ghana drop points again, their hopes of qualifying could disappear.

Ghana down 1-0 early at home to Congo. A loss here makes it almost impossible for them to qualify.

Ghana in serious trouble despite rescuing a draw. Nigeria with a statement win against Cameroon. Complete beatdown.

Scotland with no Celtic players v Lithuania: draw
Scotland with seven Celtic players v Lithuania: win
That being said, Scotland are going to beat Malta, Slovakia, and then lose to Slovenia to go down to glorious failure on the final day, in typical Scottish fashion.

That is Sviatoslav Shevchuk, Patriarch of the Ukrainian Greco-Catholic Church (my branch of Catholicism).
He's shown up in a few documentaries that are on Netflix (he's become one of the leaders of Ukraine post-Euromaidan).

Welp, the Mexico game tonight means a lot more to us now. Need El Tri to win, preferably by a lot. Honduras winning in Trinidad doesn't help.
We're all Mexico fans until midnight.
