I just finished Horizon New Dawn. Thought it was incredible. Looked at the best reviews for PS4 games and saw God of War. Never played the earlier GOW games, but picked up this newest one and am having trouble getting into it. Anyone else have this problem? All the reviews are near perfect, but I’m having trouble getting hooked. Does it take a while to get into?

Is it story or gameplay that you're having a hard time latching on to?

I felt the same way initially, but once you start to unlock more of the hub world and master the combat, the game becomes a blast. The high water portion (1st quarter) of the game is a chore due to everything being basically locked, but after the water level goes down is a game changer in my opinion. Having Mimir also adds some much needed levity to the game.
It’s absolutely worth the journey. The Valkyrie are some of the most amazing boss fights that I have played in recent memory, and the game stays challenging up until the end. Keep going!

Props for giving the circle button some love. The O button could be in the distracted boyfriend meme.
Pros:
not tons of worthless side quest.
not tons of armor and weapon sets.
Cool map / graphics / controls
Cons:
Could have had a couple more side quests
Could have had a couple more equipment sets
Not all the map is accessible.

I want to love that game, but it just bores me

Both I guess. Maybe I’m just not far enough into it yet, but it didn’t grip me as quickly as zero dawn, Witcher 3 and other great games have.

The game definitely starts a little slow but it picks up. Have you reached the lake and the base of the mountain for the first time yet? That's when I felt the game really started going more full steam. It's not nearly as action focused as past God of War games of course. It feels like a God of War game in an open world format with a stronger emphasis on story/characters. You gotta like exploring and RPG type elements a little bit more than old GoW games.
The emphasis on the story and characters are why the reviews are so over the top for it. Video games media these days seem to care far more about story and character than anything else in the game, which is why Red Dead Redemption II is also so insanely highly rated (it's a good game but there are aspects of it that are just clearly bad that all the reviewers hand waved away).
Guess what I'm saying is, you can't just look at scores, you gotta dive into the meat of it and see what if anything they say about the actual gameplay.

This is big. I know he's a goofball but video game dunkey did this video on game critics/reviews. It knocks it out of the park. Here is the video
For example, there is some things that I would take "pepe" reviews to heart but there are some games I would never take his advice. That isn't a knock on reviewers or pepe...it's just we have different views on certain things.
Keep plugging away at god of war. If that game is the foundation for the next few in the franchise....then we are in for a nice ride!

Nice. I just got to the lake where the sea level drops so hoping it picks up from here like everyone is saying. Thanks all.

It opened up for me when i had my first Valk fight. Really forced me to learn the combat. Then I wanted to fight more so..I started to explore..then the diffculty forced me to want better gear.
I dont remember how long into the game I fought my first one but I know that was the game changing moment for me.
