I'm not from the area originally (Fort Polk area) and curious if anyone around here does much mushroom hunting?

I know better than to ask for spots, but am curious what kind y'all do find around here and any tips to help find some.

Not sure where you're from originally, but that area of the state likely won't have any morels (and if they did itd be long past their season around Ft Polk.

Best bet is to look for oyster mushrooms. Find bottoms with laydowns of horizontal willow and hardwood.

I'm originally from Ohio and didn't really thinking about it early enough in the season down here this year.

From the little bit I read online I was gonna try looking for some chanterelles and oyster mushrooms, but never had any experience with them before

You won't find Morel mushrooms in Louisiana as far as I know, however you can find Oyster mushrooms, Lion's mane mushrooms and chicken of the woods fairly regularly. I found a bunch of chicken of the woods on Saturday.

As the temperature increases you will find less eatable mushrooms in my experience (not counting hallucinogenic). Best time seems to be late winter when it warms up.

I find quite a few oysters on willow trees in south Louisiana. I’ve also found lion’s mane in Baton Rouge on occasion.

Bows the time to find Morrels in Indiana , My wife’s family has 200 hundred acres out side Indy . They actually sell a lot for a decent price.

Oysters are done this year. This is Chantrelle season now. Wait till a good rain and in a couple days start looking around oak trees with lots of shade. Just cut them at the base and they will grow back. If it rains continuous for 2-3 days then don’t waste your time. The will get so water logged and mushy
