In the mood for a good war flick tonight. Suggestions?

See my Stalingrad post a few spots down... if you've seen it already, another underrated war movie that no one really knows about is Siege of Firebase Gloria, but you'll never find it at rental place.

The greatest war movie of all time is The Big Red One. Don't get the re-released version though. It's almost a completely different movie.

I love Samuel Fuller but IMHO that's not one of his best.

Some great but lesser-known war movies:
Men In War (1957)
Hell Is For Heroes (1962) w/ Steve McQueen
Any fan of WW2 movies should definitely check out the 1960s TV series Combat. Greatest war drama in TV history.
Combat IMDb
Robert Altman directed several episodes, including this classic that has no dialogue for half of its running time:
"Survival" -- watch it here

Heresy. Stop assaulting my personal culture.
"Killing insane people is not good for public relations"
"Don't worry, Smitty. It's just one of your balls. You can live without it. That's why they gave you two."
Gold, my friend. PURE gold.

I was young when I saw this movie but I was thinking about it and....(Spoilers)
Why did the British officer agree to build a bridge for the Japanese? And then, why did he try to stop his own allies from blowing up the bridge?

I love a lot of Sam Fuller:
Pickup On South Street
Forty Guns
Park Row
Fixed Bayonets
I just saw The Crimson Kimono on TCM about a month ago... Hell, I've even seen Dead Pigeon on Beethoven Street (I think that's the title)

My interpretation has always been that he didn't want all of their suffering to have been for nothing.
BTW, you should know that, although it's a great movie, the POW's who actually went through all of that HATE the film with a passion.
