Interesting facts...

1. Since 2002 there have been only 3 different teams ranked number 1 in the preseason. Those teams are USC, OK, and Ohio State. These three teams have combined for 10 wins and 8 losses in bowl games in the last 6 years.

2. USC has been a preseason number 1 in either the coaches Poll or AP Poll 4 of the last 6 years. Despite those rankings USC can lay claim to 1 BCS Title.

3. There has been only 1 instance where the preseason #1 ranked team ended the year #1, and that year was 2004 when USC defeated OK. We don't really know how good USC was because they didn't play the best team...Auburn.

4. Oklahoma has not won a BCS bowl since they defeated FSU in the 2001 National Championship game.

5. Since 2002 only 1 team has 2 BCS National Championships...LSU, and their highest ranking to begin a season in the last...Oh I don't know...forever was number 2 last year.

6. Since 2002, only 1 Pac 10 team, other than USC has been to a BCS bowl. That was Washington State, and they got trounced by OK.

7. The Pac 10, aside from USC, is a combined
14 and 13 in bowl games since 2002. With losses to such juggernauts as Wyoming, Fresno State, Hawaii, BYU, and TCU.

8. Ohio State is 0-9 against the SEC.

9. Only one team has won more games than LSU in this decade, and that is USC. Boise State is tied with LSU, but is dismissed from the team of the decade discussion because of the conference they play in. Well I say it is comparable to the conference OSU and USC play in.

Absolutely...Skews the numbers...JK. I couldn't include it because the post was based on the results of the years based on the preseason ranking.

There's a media bias, but there's really no reason to discuss it over and over again. It's natural for humans to do this. That is, either pick a cinderella story or go with something you are comfortable with.

It gives the entire W. coast and countless wagoners across the country reason to buy magazines, newspapers, and maroon sweatshirts in anticipation of another catatonic cruise through their conference schedule touting their ranking.

Part of the problem is that there are no standrads for preseason rankings - or rakings in general.

This has been discussed many times before, but what I'm talking about is the criteria on which the pollster make their picks. Many poll voters, especially in the preseason, try to pick how they they think the teams will finish at the end of the year, and therefore they strongly consider the difficulty of the schedule.

So it makes some sense that SEC teams are often undervalued in the pre-season rankings (especially 1-5), because conventional wisdom says that even the best SEC team has a stronger chance dropping a game than a Pac -10 champ or a Big 10 champ.

Having said that, I think that the strong showing of SEC schools in recent BCS title games has had a positive effect on this tendency. In other words, Georgia has benefitted in pre-season rankings, even though they have a very tough schedule, because other SEC teams have recently made it to the championship game, inspite of having 1 or 2 losses!

Truth be told, I would almost prefer it the way it is. I feel that it keeps a team hungry to be disrespected by the media.

1) Maybe they give the SEC the benefit that it is so good, they will beat up one another, thus no #1 Pre-Season Team.
2) USC consistanly pulls in the most talented recruits.

3) And finally, who gives a shite. The season will play out.

LSU fans should be the last ones to whine and complain about the BCS and the rankings. It has workered great for them.

That's what I was trying to say - less succinctly.

This is absolutely NOT correct. If you are going to post "facts" at least get them correct. LSU has more wins this decade that USC. Did you just ASSUME usc had more wins without actually looking it up?

2000 2001 2002 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007
LSU 8 10 8 13 9 11 11 12
USC 5 6 11 11 13 12 11 11

Total wins this decade:
LSU:82
USC: 80

why would a confernece title game NOT count if you are counting most wins this decade? Of course they should count. What else shouldn't you count? bowl games?

It didn't play out for Auburn in 2004. And for that matter USC was better than OK in 2003. IMO

Auburn got their asses handed to them by USC the year before in Jordan-Hare. What that means is there is really NO WAY you can say they were derserving in 2004. Maybe, maybe not.

My point is, this is the system, as screwed up as it is. By the way, it has worked pretty well for your favorite team.

The big 10 would die for a record like that in that time period.
