I like staying in Truckee/on Donner Lake, but staying right on Lake Tahoe is nice especially if the place has dock access
Not really familiar with the Nevada side

Fly into Reno and stay on the South Shore. Lots of VRBO are available and casinos are very close by. Depending on ability ski first day at Northstar then Alpine Meadows on day 2. Ski Squaw day 3 and Heavenly on day 4. When the snow is right it is a wonderful place.

Look into staying on the west shore near Homewood

We went this past June and stayed in Incline Village in a Condo overlooking the lake. Had to drive everywhere, wasnt exactly a "village" like I had in mind. If we went back, I would stay in Tahoe City. Walkable, lots of dining and shopping but not crazy busy like South Lake Tahoe. Even during the COVID times, lunch was hour- 2hour wait due to the crush of folks there.

We go often in Summer.I like staying on North Shore. Stayed here last few times.

Kings beach beautiful place in summer to kayak. Go east to enjoy navigating the boulders. Great concert venue at Harvey’s and hiking galore. Pick best calm day rent a boat and go from one end to the other Emerald Bay is incredible. Get up to Squaw Valley one day. Take gondola to high camp and have lunch ,hike or catch a concert . It’s a world class destination enjoy your trip

I agree with the North Shore for summer, from Tahoe City to Carnelian Bay, as it is quiet but with plenty of commercial shops, grocery stores, etc. Its also reasonable to Truckee. A boat rental from Kings Beach is a must. I think everyone should travel the length of the lake to Emerald on the water.
The thing to look at in renting a place is to really scrutinize how difficult a walk it is down to the water. There are places in Tahoe that are relatively close to the lake but upon closer inspection may be a beast to get to considering the incline back up from the lake.

Went last summer and fell in love. We stayed on the south shore. One thing I'll say is that the hotels aren't really nice. Lets just say the pics online were carefully selected bc it was a dump when we arrived. Outside of that, the trip was perfect. Next time we go we are either staying at a casino or getting a vrbo/airbnb.
Easy to drive around, get to the beaches early because there aren't a ton of parking spots.
Trying to get back there this summer but the wife wants to go elsewhere.
Eta: breakfast at Glazed and Confused for donuts is a must do. I think we went 2 or 3 times. Heidi's Pancake House was also damn good but had a hell of a wait. There's a large souvenir store next door to kill time in.

I lived in Tahoe City and worked/skied in Squaw Valley for a year or two back in the day. I agree with a Kings Beach to Emerald Bay boat ride but I’d skip the Booze cruise touristy trip from South Shore. Garwoods is a great restaurant, sunnyside out on the deck is a must do. Bring your golf clubs and/or tennis racquets. The gondola was a great recommendation up to the high camp at Squaw. Tahoe is my favorite spot ever and I wish to have my ashes scattered there when I pass
