When did Holiday Inn Express up their game?

I always stay at Marriott's. Usually 100-125 nights a year (outside of last year).
Stayed in Ely, NV two nights this week and only decent hotel was Holiday Inn Express. It was really nice. I remember last time I stayed at one it was a dump but that was probably 3-4 years ago.
I will say the breakfast options was alot better than your Residence Inn, Towneplace or Springhills.

They were serving food? I travel 4 nights a week/year and have only seen fruit, muffins, and yogurt being served since COVID. Sometimes not even that.
I have changed hotel chains and started staying at the Home2Suites when they are available.

This one did. You did have to wait in line and the staff would serve the food for you. They had hot food.

IHG rewards is my primary so I have stayed in several. A few years ago they changed the concept of the new ones and have incorporated it into the remodeled ones. I really like the one in downtown Pensacola but on the other hand I stayed in one by the Braves new stadium back in 2019 and it was the older concept and didn’t like it at all with the exception of the nice lady who ran the breakfast. The new ones more closely resemble their Indigo brand than they do the Candlewood Suites brand which is what they used to remind me of. I definitely check the age and photos to see if there has been a remodel before booking one.
