Golf in the Dallas Area

I'll be in Dallas for a few days for a conference. I can play one day. How is Golf Clubs at the Tribute? What are some other recommendations? Thanks in advance!

Haven't played the Tribute. Personally I recommend getting a tee time at Steven's Park if you can. It's a fun track with great views of the Dallas skyline. Usually in good shape too. Another one I enjoy playing is Cedar Crest, it's in a tough area but is a fun layout. If you're trying to stay north, get a tee time at Cowboys Golf Club after twilight starts. The normal tee times are around $200 but afternoon is like $80. Those would be my top 3. I prefer the more old school layouts like Cedar Crest and Steven's though so factor that in. All three will probably have slow pace of play unless you are one of the first groups out in the morning.

Buddy played it a couple of weeks ago and said the greens weren't good.
Id recommend Texas Rangers and Texas Star as they're in the same general area and both are in good shape. Tee times are expensive enough they price a lot of horrible players out. We played Rangers last Saturday at 2 and played in 4:20

I'm honestly stunned it would take anyone more than 4 hours to play a round of golf. And yes I'm sure it's because you were waiting on other groups in front of you. Just don't understand no matter how good or bad someone is that they can't play faster. I've played with bad golfers that play fast so just sucking at golf isn't an excuse.

Played the Highlands (Tenison Park) a few weeks ago and the course is in good shape.
Good luck with getting a tee time at Stevens. I've tried probably 5 times since moving here and have had no luck.

I don't disagree with you. I played with 2 guys that played college golf and were we not waiting we would have played in probably 3:30 to 3:45 at 7,000 yards and them shooting around par. Most of the backup was really at the turn because every group stops. We waited on the tees for them to finish in the fairway but not too bad.
And the guys in front of us were a foursome and horrible. One had to be pushing 4 bills

I hate that course just based on the price. You can play better courses for cheaper

You have to call the morning of 7 days in advance. If you are a single you can just call and show up and they can usually pair you up. I've done that 3 or 4 times. I just called and told them I could be there in 10 minutes if they had anything and every time that were able to squeeze me in with 30 or so minutes.

I played Golf Club of Dallas a few months ago. It's a Maxwell design. It was in pretty good shape. Fair price. Was really easy to get on. The layout and course were fantastic.

OP didn't tell us where he's staying, but mentioned The Tribute. That is like and hour and half away from GCoD
Eta: and thorntree is a better course in that area.

I think it's maybe overpriced by $10 (maybe $20 for making us drive through the hood), but I don't mind if it keeps the course more open like it was when we played. It's also <10 minutes from me.

Last two times I called a week in advance before 9 and they were booked for all morning tee times. I have yet to try for a week day though.

It's close to me as well, but if I'm staying close I'd rather play cedar crest. Thorntree and sherrill park are both within about 20 minutes and they are infinitely better golf courses.
I've played it a handful of times, just isnt my preference. I would check those two I mentioned out if you haven't.

Yeah I've never played those other two. Will have to check them out before I move in July.

I'm not from Dallas, fwiw. I should have started there. I have no clue where any of these courses are in relation to each other or what not, and I've only played there and Mansfield National in my travels to DFW, so I can't compare any of them.
Just dropping a line the GCoD was a lot do fun when I played it.

You can get on Steven's Park if you show up when they stop sending people off around 6:00PM during the week and walk on.
I'd recommend Cedar Crest, Bear Creek (either course), or if you want a higher quality track Texas Rangers. I would assume you're staying in the Design District/Med Center area right?

I've had to cancel Thorntree twice in a row because of cancellings/weather

They've had the best greens of the affordable public courses, IMO. At least that I've played. A lot of places are just now starting to get them back from the winter storm.

Ya, Cedar Crest is in great condition but their greens are concrete. Same with the other course I frequent close to town ala Irving, Stevens, Bear Creek. Where do you usually play? I didn't realize you were a Dallas baw.

All over but mainly north just because the group I play with is up towards Plano. I've played most every public course at some point though

I can vouch for GCD, it's a decent track. Usually not hard to get a tee time either for whatever reason.

We've been coming up to play Ridgeview lately. Any other recommendations in that area? We're trying to explore things outside of 15 minutes from Dallas.
