My wife has been on me for a weekend getaway just the two of us. I have a unique idea, but it seems like too much sitting down.

Day 1: Fly to Portland and catch dinner

Day 2: Start of Amtrak train from Portland to Chicago. See attached map. There are cars for viewing only. Would get a private room. LINK

Day 3. Train ride continued and dinner in Chicago upon arrival.

Day 4. Fly to Lafayette

While I love the idea of resting and relaxing...that's a lot of sitting between flights and train ride.

Intrigued because it seems like a simple way to see the country. I love the idea of having nothing to do but look out the window and take in the scenery. Am I overthinking this?

Start your search for train rides with this outfit

If that is too pricey, search Amtrak south from Portland to LA

I just watched a YouTube video the other day of a train ride from Chicago to San Francisco. It looked pretty cool. Lots of scenic views.

This is the video

That *is* a lot of sitting, especially with masks required in public areas like the domed sightseeing cars.

We flew in to Denver, stayed at the hotel that is inside Union Station, took the portion of the California Zephyr from Denver to Glenwood Springs (which was beautiful), enjoyed the hot springs, and went back to Denver the next day to continue our trip. Might make a good weekend trip if you’re looking for a scenic Amtrak ride.

It's something that I've always wanted to do. It seems like a great way to see parts of the country that you might not be able to see otherwise.

A friend of mine used to like the Chicago to Portland ride. He would start in Hammond to Chicago. then, transfer.

I think you pass a lit of pretty country, but a lot of Montana is at night.
