For those not familiar here’s how it goes.

In Captain Marvel, set in 1995, Nick Fury tells Danvers that if toast is cut diagonally he can’t eat it.

Fury takes a fatal blow in Winter Soldier, from which he miraculously appears to recover from in incredible time.

The theory goes that Talos takes his place at that time and the real Fury was taken to the Skrulls ship for recovery.

As further evidence, it seems that in Age of Ultron Fury eats a sandwich diagonally. The shot actually makes it hard to tell if it’s cut horizontally or diagonally but that’s what the theorists have gone with.

He’s under cover the whole time until Spider-Man FFH reveals the truth.

I tend to think it was just a pathetic mistake on the directors of Captain Marvel’s part, but then again it’s not entirely clear which way the toast is cut in AoU. I also think the Avengers that know Fury best would’ve picked up on the differences between Talos and the real Fury.

Anybody believe the theory?

A theory based on a throw away line about how Fury likes his toast cut that is supposedly supported by a sandwich he cuts in Age of Ultron...but we don't actually see the sandwich?

I dunno. Sounds sketchy.

Yes. It was a retcon movie - retroactive continuity. There are bound to be errors, and there were several. You can eliminate CM from the Marvel movies and it doesn't really change anything except someone else would be punching Thanos.

[blogpost on]

As for Captain Marvel, movie was hot fricking garbage. My understanding was that it was aimed at women, but when watching it, my wife turned to me halfway through it and said, "is it me or is this movie kind of flat?"

Recognizing her wife-speak as "i'm bored out of my fricking mind" I told her, 'yeah wtf this movie sucks arse' and turned it off. Some months later we watched Endgame and she immediately mocked CM's 'dyke cut' at the end and when we left the movie she said that CM had no business being in the movie and everything she did should have been done by Thor. If i wasn't already married to her I would have proposed to her on the spot.

[blogpost off] Anyway I think the theory is fun but it's a bunch of hooey.

Captain Marvel being a retcon movie to shoehorn an unnecessary character meant it was going to have continuity issues, and this is one of them.

An entire Skrull Battalion is in the final battle in Endgame. Talos was there. The swap happened after Tony's funeral.

Theorycrafting? Oof! I thought those days were long-gone.
