I know that Morgan City is expecting to be about 8ft under. I pick up used oil and have been having alot of my customers call me out there and get everything they have because they are expecting everything to be under water. Normally Im out there maybe twice a week but it looks like I'll be getting a shitload of oil in the next few weeks since the area I cover is Houma, Morgan City/Amelia, everything down to Fourchon, and the entire NO/westbank area.

I can see it now. On the national telethon to raise money for relief, Troy from Swamp People says "Dat der Bayrock Ombammer hait de coonass".

The highest I have seen the water in bR is just above the Baton Rouge Sign on the levee. I would imagine up river from BR could get it pretty bad

You are right. I was trying to hear Troy's voice in my head and translate it to words.

What would happen if that failed?
atchafalaya would be the new mississppi river. every town within a mile of the atchafalaya will longer exist. but we have morganza and the west atchafalaya river floodway in avoyelles to prevent that from happening.

Lets blow the levee in Plaquemines Parish again, just for old time sake.
Posted on 4/30/11 at 4:35 pm to TravelSmartly
that would actually do a lot of good in rebuilding the marshes.

New Orleans would no longer be a port
Sure it would. The bottom of the Mississippi is 130 feet below sea level at New Orleans so there is plenty of draft even if the river isn't flowing. The river would become salt water though which would screw up the New Orleans drinking water (already pretty terrible). A larger impact would be on the chemical industry, salt water would wreck their cooling water systems. They could probably supply themselves from wells, though.

I remember the river got pretty damn high back 3 years ago.
When that occurred the river was at 57 foot flood stage at Natchez, it's supposed to be 60 on May 20th this go round (quick fyi it was 59 feet not a week ago so it might go up)

The idea of using FEMA to buy out homes in the flood plain areas and converting the area to it natural state sounds like the best idea to me. Personally I think they ought to do that with many of the flood prone areas here in LA. Blow the levees and let it turn back into wetland plus it will help with coastal erosion.

If anyone is interested in the subject mater of this thread and has not read Rising Tide by John Barry. Get on Amazon right now and get it.

Rising Tide was a great read. I too recommend checking it out.

Blowing the levees is not a good idea. There are a lot of people that live on flood plains. I grew up in the shadow of a Ms river levee. This was sometimes scary 1973 was the worst.

That's pretty cool.
So the Bonnet Carre Spillway has only been used eight times, and the Morganza spillway only once(in 1973)
and I've never heard of the "fuse plug levee" so we have three protection systems in place. Yeah I'm not worried.

Westminster is considered to be a flood zone. Parents were forced to buy flood insurance when they moved there in 1967...pretty sure it's still considered one...
