If you are bringing vodka, empty out water bottles and fill them. If you are bringing whiskey empty out coke bottles. Put them in the middle of all of your clothes and they wont snigg em out. We brought 5 handles in 3 suitcases on a cruise a week ago.

You really don't need to. They do not care what you bring.

Exactly. They don't go through your luggage. Bring it in whatever you want to bring it in. If you feel more comfortable transferring to plastic just for breakage reasons...I hear ya. But I always just wrapped mine in bubble wrap and it was fine.

Another tip....liquor is dirt cheap on the ship. When you buy it on there, you can't have it right away but they will deliver it to your room the day before the cruise is over. I've gotten mine as early as the morning before!

This is not true.. I have known many people that have had bottles taken from their checked and carry on luggage. They do pass your luggage through xray and if its obvious they will remove it. For the most part though you can take whatever. Also note that your room steward will take it from you as well if its out in the open and obvious. Now one thing I noticed was that if you carry your luggage off the ship you could probably sneak in a midget from Cozumel in your bags and they wouldnt even bat an eye. Didnt check anything in customs just ID. Not sure if this is true for all ports though.

Yes that was the only cruise line I was referring to as its the one most people I know go on.

I would guess that its more specific to port though than cruise line since the people that do the bag checks are port employees not cruiseline employees. I have known people that have had bottles of alcohol taken from both galveston and new orleans ports and I have known more people that have had their bags opened and checked. (Security going on board is just like airport security) at least after 9/11 it has been. Now getting off the ship is very lax.

In that case, wrap it and put it in your shoes

Hey they at least dont make you take off your shoes.. that may work..

You can easily play your odds and get on the ship with it in the checked luggage but I would at least make it harder on them. Easiest thing to do is buy one of those rum runners kits that you can put in your bags that are made to sneak alcohol. I would never want to pack a glass bottle in my luggage anyways seeing how they throw your bags around.. Now wrapping them in bubble wrap like she did would work and probably help get through security with it as well.

I definitely have never heard of this happening and I'm going on my 13th cruise in October. Right when I meet my room steward I give him/her $20 and I am treated like royalty the entire time. I put all my bottles out and tell them that I'd really appreciate having fresh ice at all times...and I always do.

The stewards live off of their tips and I would find it hard to believe that a steward would report someone for bringing liquor and risk losing their tip.

My experience has been that the stewards couldn't care less what goes on in your room. They care about their tip and making sure that you are taken care of and have a good time.

I'm not saying it never happened but I would say it might be a one in a million thing.

Later edit: I'm not sure if you were meaning that they'd take it/turn you in....or if you meant they'd steal it. I've never experienced either.

I do not know of anyone personally that has had a steward take it. Just from reports of it occuring on sites like Cruisecritic. I do know people that have had it removed from their bags at embarkation though. But they made no real effort to conceal it in their bags either.

BTW yes they work on tips but of couse most are autotipped now (especially on carnival) The line to adjust your account at the pursor's desk is always too long the night before getting off the ship to even bother.

On a side note a guy I know was a waiter on Celebrity before he came to this country.. You should hear some of the stories.. He made 50 a month without tips. Said with the tips he would make about 1500-2000 but it all depended on how many tables you had.. If you got bad reviews they would cut your tables so he learned all kinds of magic tricks and such..

When boarding the ship, can you take your bags on yourself? I don't usually even check my bags for flying and would rather just take them in myself.....

You can if you want.. Some people around you will gripe about you doing it since it may slow the line down..

Excellent- if I can make it through an airport and an airplane at a fast enough speed, I'm sure I won't have a problem getting on a boat....I don't like people throwing my bags around....

I would just check in my own bags and carry them on, but the wife is coming too. We have I think 6 bags of luggage and she will use 5. I get the small one probably. We have 3 couples going and 2 of the wives cut hair for a living so you know how much they can pack.

Yikes! I am a female, but I hate waiting for my bags at the airport and people throwing my stuff around, so I make things fit into what I can carry on

ETA: Plus all I will pretty much need is swimsuits....I am mad I do have to bring a nice dress for dinner - and shoes to go w/ it....ugh. I would be in a swimsuit/coverup all week if it was up to me

FYI if you are on Carnival they dont really do formal nights anymore its called 'cruise elegant' now.. some people dress up some dont.

Also for the other poster you should have had your wife go on the cruise we went on a few weeks back out of Galveston they had some convention on it with stylist. Bunch of people on there were cruising on vacation and writing it off as business.

Hmm- I read if you are in the dining room, you have to be dressed appropriately and one night was dressy....I'll certainly look into this, b/c I'd love it if its true!

I wore my sandals and untucked shirt every night to dinner. No one said a word.

Them CruiseCritic goody 2 shoes will try to put the fear of God in you and make you feel bad for "smuggling" a little hooch. Cries of "they will take it from you!!!" is a bunch of bull. Been on several cruises. Did the same thing every time. Packed my stuff in checked bags. First time I see my cabin steward I spot him $20 and point to my cooler and say..."never let it run out of ice!" I have never had a lack of ice or had anything taken from me.
