I miss when union was by Jesuit. I ate their cubans a lot after school.

The Medianoche at Liborio was the best(yes even better than a Central Grocery Muff) sandwich downtown for lunch.

solo is on his way over to give you a talking to after the anti-central comment

I am ready TA. We agree on 99% of your or my posts, but the medianoche from Liborio(where Cuvee is now) was my favorite lunch spot in the CBD. I love the muff at Central, but the medianoche at Librio was pure bliss.

I make a bunch of Cuban sandwiches whenever I have company on the weekends.

When they were next to Rock N Bowl. Nothing beat one of their medianoches, plus they sold the bread and everything if you wanted to make your own. Their bakery was badass.
I haven't been to Liborio's in so long that I can barely remember what the food was like. There's a new place in Kenner that I'm dying to try out, I might go home to NOLA for the Superbowl and try it the day before:

Yes. The idea behind using a flat grill is that you heat the sandwich evenly until the Swiss cheese melts, and the bread is evenly toasted. Panini grills won't heat it the same, and the sandwiches will look odd with grill marks in them. Some Cuban sandwich presses have plates that could be reversed, which is also great for cleaning.
An alternative is to simply push the sandwich down in a frying pan with another pan/skillet.

Looks like they dress it with mayo, lettuce and tomato, though.

I don't care if its tradition or not, this is my recipe for Cuban sanwhiches,
Marinate a pork tenderloin in:
2 tbls orange juice
1 tbls lime juice
garlic
cumin
salt/pepper
I marinate it overnight, then bake it at 350 for about 15 min on each side, take it out, tent it with foil for about 5 min, then slice for sandwhiches
Make a MoJo Sauce by: Mixing fresh garlic, salt, cumen, pepper and lime juice in the cuisinarte, then slowly add olive oil while keeping it mixing - then you stir that into some mayo to spread on the bread - add the pork, some sliced ham, swiss cheese, japs and pickles - then put in a sandwhich press - brush the bread with butter first - yummy.

Best Cuban Sammach in La. is by far Latin Corner in Morgan City. Use to eat there for lunch all the time. I live in Miami now and cant find even one place that compares.

Pardon my cynicism, but that's kind of like saying that you live in Ville Platte, but the best boudin you ever had was in Nebraska. Ybor City and Miami make the best Cubans in the country, Tampa especially because they have the real deal bakeries making Cuban bread with the traditional palm fronds process.
You can get a great Cuban sandwich at a handful of places in Louisiana, but you really can't compare it to Miami/Tampa. There are about 50 restaurants and cafes in Miami alone that sell Cubans.

Well I've been to quite a few here, and dont get me wrong, they are amazing. But Latin Corner is still by far the best I've had. Its run by a family of Cubans that somehow migrated to Morgan City. If youve ever had one you'd understand.

Churro's Cafe in Metairie has great "Cubanos". They're on Kingman near Clearview Shopping Center.

Was Union behind Rock and Bowl? Tiny little restaurant, maybe 10 tables, and the owner had her little Mary table shrine? Is that the place? The Cuban sandwich was quite good if I remember, last time I was there was probably 5 or 6 years ago.

Union was in the same strip mall as Rock N Bowl, it was on the side of it. It was a Latin supermarket, not a place where you could sit down and eat. They basically had a grocery area, butcher shop and a bakery. After Katrina they opened up new locations in Metairie and Gretna.
