O well. I guess it's just one of those lame "if you've never done it or been there, you wouldn't know" things.

Parrot bar in Jarreau(False River). Formerly Bueche's and a couple more before that I can't recall.

I would say the georges under the overpass qualifies.

People bring their kids to eat there, so no. Maybe after 10 PM.

+1 on the Time Out Lounge. It's the kind of place that has pictures on the walls of its Christmas parties and you can find every person in the pictures sitting at the bar, always. First time I went - maybe 9 years ago - the place had carpet, you had to shut the door behind you, and beer came in a can fetched out of a household refrigerator.

It has changed since, they have coolers, and bottled beer. But last time I went - Saints Cowboys 09 - a grizzled old drinking veteran was sitting at the bar screaming about Miles Austin being "a high yella motha fricker," and "tackle that fricking n!**#$."

So I guess the alcohol is much stronger at dive bars then?

Or does the darkness, or bad smell, or maybe the roach population make the alcohol act quicker?

Don't know if you are being serious with this snob attitude but I will play.

Yes the drinks are stronger...but most people will be drinking beer. You go to see the people. You can always find them there. You talk politics, tigers, and other subjects that arise. It's more like having drinks with your buddies except you don't have to bring them cause they are always there. It's dark, smokey, and there is not a woman in there you want to go home with....at least not sober....but it has it's charm and share of characters. You don't bring a date and you better not have an attitude...it may not be your kind of place.

Not really trying to be a snob. Just questioning the "elitist" attitude that some people have about going to dives bar and being proud about it. Snobby people like to say, "O I am going to fancy place, blah blah;" people on the opposite end do it as well regarding places like dive bars. Not saying anyone in here is acting like it, but a lot of people do.

I understand this 100%, but the definition in the original post didn't really say anything about this. All it talked about was the bar being dirty and stinky and possibly containing roaches.

Is it possible to go to a decent bar, and get to know the locals? Is the bar on the show Cheers considered a dive bar?

You nailed it..
Oh, and to add to that,,, when you go in there, you may smell bad, but for sure, when you come out, you'll damn sure smell bad...

ETA: IMO, Cheers = neighborhood bar or pub, not a "dive"... In a dive bar, you usually won't see anything like Kirsty Alley looked like, back in the day...

So the only difference between a neighborhood bar and a dive bar is the women are hotter at a neighborhood bar? And it may be darker and smell worse in a dive bar?

Cheers was on TV....that's hollywood.

There are local watering holes where you can get to know some locals....We hold choir practice at georges at george o'neal every sunday. But what dawg is talking about is old dives that have been around a long time and show the wear. You can't decorate that. It just has to happen with age and like an old pair of jeans...they just feel good

Not at all. I know what a dive bar is. Just trying to get an idea of what makes one so special. So far the only positive I see so far is:

if you get a drink instead of beer, the drink will be stronger at a dive bar

Seashell, just an observation if you don't mind.

Your questions make these guys think too much. They are incapable of this function. Heres what they know: Water is wet, rocks are hard and Dive Bars are Dive Bars. They do not know WHY...

If you ask your questions with this in mind, you'll do fine.
