This thread is a reminder about why I stopped reading the OT years ago. Can we stop all the arguing about the semantics of a dive bar?

For the love of god, in 5 pages, you people haven't mentioned Ms Mae's!

I think what everyone seems to be dancing around is that the atmosphere at a dive bar is different than a neighborhood bar in that a dive bar isn't one YOU go to regularly, but there will always be a collection of sad-looking rough old characters in there.

I like going to dive bars when I don't want to talk about anything that means anything. Usually that's because I'm in a low-down kind of mood, and I just want to drown that blah feeling. But that's just me.

An interesting one on Magazine St. is the Rendezvous. About 10 years ago, it was a really dive in the truest possible sense of what that is. Place was literally like a little self contained community/economy. Most of its "patrons" lived in the flophouse upstairs, and would stumble down and take their places inside at the beginning of their day and stumble upstairs to sleep it off at the end. Seemed to be pretty much run completely on government money because I have no other idea of where its patrons' income could have come. I remember walking in once back then, thinking I'd grab a quick beer during the hectic hubub of mardi gras weekend, and the place was just completely oblivious to everything going on outside.

A few years ago, tough, it cleaned itself up, shut down the flophouse upstairs and ran off its denizens, and reinvented itself from a "true" dive into more of a contrived dive.

We have dives, we just have to drive to most of them which sucks. I am a searcher of the perfect dive. Lemme break down places you ppl need to check out if you want a true dirty shady dive bar w food jukebox.
1.The Boondock Saint in Nola on St Peters across from preservation hall
2. Johnny Whites in Nola. Next door to boondock. Perfect for the morning drinker.
3. The Erin Rose on conti in Nola. Just north of bourbon.
4. Sophie's in the East Village NYC
5. Rudy's in hells kitchen NYC. 9ave @ 44th
6. Doc Hollidays in the EastVillage NYC.
Note these places are actual dives, so don't go in and think this place is kind if dirty or who's the creepy guy shooting grandad at 2:30 in the evening. It's a dive, not a pub

Now, you know darn good and well that this is not me. I know what a dive bar is and I've been to many. I'm not sure how I made it out alive in some of them when I think back on them, now. I sure had fun, though. Had to throw away some of the clothes I wore, however. I don't even think a good washing could have taken the stench out of them.

So, would you classify Miss Mae's on Magazine as a dive or a neighborhood bar or a little of both? I think it's sort of both.

I wouldn't classify it as a neighborhhoid bar because it is in a stretch where there are multiple bars in a few blocks. IMO, neighborhood bars are the only one in immediate area
