We were one of those pockets in BR that was without power for nearly 3 weeks. Luckily, we had a Coleman stove and a generator so we could save the stuff in the fridge and the freezer. We had lots of canned food and easy prep/clean-up stuff.
We went through some of our MREs and my husband took a bunch of leftover ones to the camp during hunting season. We still have a couple of cases in our "hurricane stockpile" for this year.

I drove to Gulf Port, to get McDonalds and a couple of a/c's.
Life was good. McDonalds never tasted better.

Gustav taught me a few things.
#1 - You can cook anything on a bbq pit. I baked bread (Pillsbury Loaf) on a pit. The pit also bakes potatoes
#2 - Ice - find a good supply or know your fema line. I had 4 supersized ice chests. I went thru a Fema line 4 times in one day. Changed vehicles, clothes & hats. Kept them filled up
#3 - Learned who had power and moved cold food to their house.
Really, there is no excuse to run out of food in a hurricane unless you keep a bare pantry or don't plan. Anyone who went thru Katrina knows to prepare for the worst. I had bread, pb&j, crackers, canned goods for days, beef jerky, cases of water & coke, chips, etc.

The only fond memory that I have of Gustav was the immediate days afterwards when the neighbors and I were pooling together perishable foods which turned out to be one of the most memorable picnics. I had the capable gas grill and we all pitched in whatever was thawing in the freezer or perishable items in the fridge...we had jumbo lump crabmeat topped steaks, vennison sausage, duck breasts, stir fry shrimp, etc.
