I was going to put French toast crunch, but just found out they started making it again, off to the store.

Manuel's Hot Tamales in New Orleans. Their shop use to be located about 6 blocks from my house and they went out of business a good while ago.

Can't remember if it was because of Katrina, since their place got flooded or if it was just that there was nobody willing to do the work in the family as the original owners were getting on in years.

They sell them out of carts on street corners and through a window at their shop.

It was because of Katrina. The contractors that were hired to do cleanup stole a lot of their stainless steel equipment and they had inadequate insurance to boot.

A couple of years ago there was talk of a grandson reopening somewhere in Metairie. A friend and I got to wondering about it and found that someone incorporated the name Manuel's Hot Tamales, but nothing ever came of it.

I believe they suffered the same fate as Hubig's Pies. The ownership had been spread over several generations and the family couldn't agree.

Thanks for clearing that up. I figured it was because of Katrina, but wasn't sure.

Sounds a bit like the crap that went/goes on with the Randazzo family with their bakeries and claim to the best King Cake.

Are they the ones that had a ham and potato salad sandwich? I loved those.

Nothing else out there today compares. The chicken salad and egg salad were elite. Tuna salad was no slouch either. The cold cuts were pretty good, but usually didn't get those.

Wasn’t that the place that had the rat pee everywhere?

ETA:

Found a story on it

Yea, some health code violations led to their downfall, if I remember correctly. I never got sick from their food.

At least Randazzo's still has multiple locations to choose from, based on where you live and which tastes you prefer. MHT has nothing but memories and family squabbles over reopening their food business legacy.

I've been to the one in Chalmette a few times and have gotten their Kind Cakes, eclairs---that are to die for, shoe soles and a few other pastries.

I've also gotten Kind Cakes from the one on Severn in Metairie and I can't tell them apart as far as taste, texture and appearance.

Yeah, I remember all the Randazzo family squabbles over the years over their King Cake recipe. Funny how family is when it comes to MONEY.

Still have one down in Franklin...not sure that it’s worth THAT trip hahhaha

I saw that online when I took a trip back to La last year. Was thinking about taking a ride over and checking it out, but have no if I'd just be wasting my time or not.

I was kiddin around...Danny’s is still there and if you like their chicken and onion rings , you’ll be happy you made the trip.
Outside of that, the historic district (Main Street) is a nice drive through.
