I thought that by law, Tennessee whiskey must meet the requirements of straight bourbon, and also be from Tennessee.

What makes it not bourbon? If I remember right, the requirements are greater than 50% corn, and then a few proof restrictions, including being at least 80% when bottled. And of course, be distilled in America.

eta:
Here is language in NAFTA about what constitutes bourbon and Tennessee whiskey

The difference is in the filtering process. JD is filtered through charcoal, whereas a true Kentucky Bourbon goes straight from the barrel to the bottle.

Of course all that info was shared when I went to the bourbon distilleries so maybe they are a bunch of assholes that hate Tennessee.

Yes, and FYI at Heavenhill (owners of Evan Williams and Elijah Craig) there are several barrels of bourbon on the top floor of their Rik houses that will be bottled later this year. 28 years old. Barrelled the first year their master distiller took over. He is retiring at the end of the year.

I'd imagine that it would be like going to Islay and ordering a Dalmore.

Ya know what a surprisingly good bourbon Old Charter 10 year is?

I'm a fan, it's a pretty solid deal too for a gameday and putting on a power drunk.

Had Blanton's for the first time a couple of weeks ago and it was fantastic. My new #1. Sipping that on the rocks helped make for a nice evening.

I'm a fan of Bookers Bourbon. Usually bottled between 120 -130 proof, yet somehow remains smooth to me. I've tried pretty much everything in this thread. Next I want to try Jefferson 18 yr. Also Jack Daniels sucks. I can't take the charcoal flavor.

So it's just what we always called "bottom of the barrel bourbon".

I know guys that would make it themselves using old barrels.

Three to try:

Bourbon - Basil Hayden's, Jefferson Small Batch
Rye - Redemption Rye
Canadian - Collingwood

All can be had for about $25 per bottle, which is not bad for sippin whiskey

You don't have to drink it straight; however, it is a sin to ruin good bourbon with anything except ice and perhaps a little water. I like to water my bourbon down to about 60-70 proof depending on the variaty.

I like Makers Mark, but there are several others I like as much or better... Makers 46, Knob Creek, Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve, and when I really want to treat myself, I buy Elijah Craig. I can't afford the Single Barrel version of Elijah Craig though.

I cleaned out my grandmothers store room last week, and found an un opened bottle of 8 Year Old Charter from my grandfather. He died 15 years ago. I don't plan on opening it for a long time, or a very special occasion. Just curious what to expect? Will it be better than a regular bottle of eight year old charter? Or since its much older, will it be better? I know, its still going to be Old Charter, but I for one, like Old Charter.

ETA: Nevermind, I just ready about it not aging once its out the barrel.

Once it is bottled it doesn't age anymore. Having a 15 year+ old bottle of 8 Year Old Charter will give you a bottle of regular 8 Year Old Charter.

It might taste the same, but I'm sure it will mean a lot more to you than any other bottle would
