I almost never order a steak anywhere anymore. Just something I can do too easy at home for far cheaper.
But, considering they are a chophouse you would expect more I guess.
That damn duck duo had me at hello though. I need to make a return trip and try a couple more of the apps.

so why can't a supposed five-star restaurant with access to prime cuts and the proper equipment not do this ?

Especially when half of their menu (space wise) is dedicated to steaks.

Yep.Plenty of chef created dishes on the menu to choose from.

I've eaten damn near all of them after a few trips and can't wait to sprinkle the table liberally again.

wow .. didn't realize that .. that makes this even more mind boggling .. after reading this thread, i was talking to a friend that i know loves the place and i asked him if he's ever had a bad meal there .. and he said, "once, the only time i ever ordered a steak" ...

They only have 4 steak options on thier menu. Maybe Varnadoe doesnt want stroubes to be known as a "steakhouse" anymore.

It's Stroubes seafood and steaks, not Stroubes chophouse anymore.

If I plan on dropping $30+ on a steak, I'm not going to a "seafood and steak" place. I'm goin to steakhouse.

I hope this is the case.

I know the owner was a long time manager of J Alexanders, and while I think J's does a decent job for the price, I wouldn't ever put it in the same category as Ruth's or Fleming's.

ETA: I Don't know if they were using the same cooking methods as J's, was just a thought.

It really is crazy to think a chophouse has meh steaks but great dishes otherwise. Doesn't affect me though, b/c when a restaurant has entees that are unique or well thought out, I rarely get steak. I save steak for at home.

I think there are a few steaks and a ton of sauce options, actually...same set up for fish ala carte, too.

Yeah.... This is why I don't want to go to such expensive restaurants. At that kind of price, if the service and food is anything less than mind blowing it's a huge waste of $$ imo.

I did that once at Fleming's, never again. The blue cheese topping was delicious, but way too rich and overpowering for such a good cut of meat.

Stroubes.com

Stroubes Seafood and Steaks.

The old website was stroueschophouse.com if I'm not mistaken.

Check the menu, the only steak that is "prime" is the strip. They used to have a prime ribeye but dropped it. They downsized the steak options around the time the new guy took over. The only other options are a filet (2 sizes) or a ribeye, neither are prime. They have 6 fish dishes and a few chef inspired dishes.

No reason to order a $30 steak at a seafood/steak resutaurant and expect to be on par with a $40+ steak from a prime steakhouse.

to me, the steak should just stand alone, if prepared properly and is a top shelf cut of meat .. i always looked at the lump crab meat, sauteed shrimp, stuff like that as things that just mask the flavor of the meat or just cover up an average steak ..

, but if you never tried it you would never know for yourself. If I have some crabmeat at home I'll have a little cup of it onthe side. Just enough for a two or three combo bites, thats it. It's my 2nd favorite food on top of my 4th favorite food.

I'll do it at home for sure, especially with crab meat and maybe a buerre blanc sauce. Yum.

I'm just not going to make that mistake at a prime steakhouse again. No need to pay extra to take away from the steak's flavor.

None at all. $8-12 for one crab worth of meat. They make a killing on people ordering those overpriced toppings. By weight I'm sure they're double the price of the steak in many cases.

I dont get the feeling that he restaurant under Varnadoe is intended to be a steak house. I wouldnt be suprised if they cut it down to 2 steak options eventually.

My wife enjoyed the steak she had there last time I went but it was the scallops that came with it that made the dish.
