I have so much nostalgia for this game due to death actually matters.
Before all the changes to Star Wars Galaxies, you could unlock a Jedi (extremely difficult) and work your way up the talent tree, but if you were killed by a Bounty Hunter three times (something like that) your character would suffer perma-death.

Not to hijack the thread, but curious - I played STO at launch and was greatly disappointed.Boring, repetitive missions, limited diplomatic solutions to missions (a mission once took me to a bar and I ended up killing everyone there - then, as a good Star Fleet captain, looted everything there), very disappointing planet surface missions. The best part was the ship combat system but it wasn't enough to keep me playing.
You have missed a lot of changes then. I've been playing a little over a month now, and I hear from the guys in my fleet how much the game has improved since launch.
I mostly fly a Bird of Prey on the Klingon side of our fleet these days. I got two commanders on the Federation side..a science and a tactical officer...and a Vice Admiral Engineer in an Assault Cruiser.
My Klingon Engineer is almost a Brigadier General (Vice Admiral equivalent), and I'm looking forward to flying the B'rel refit BoP with Enhanced Battle Cloak at Lieutenant General.
If you remember Chang's Bird of Prey in "The Undiscovered Country", it can fire torpedoes and mines from cloak, as well as use most bridge officer abilities.
Season Four is set to release this summer, and you'll finally be able to create a Klingon and level it up from the beginning. They'll instituting new ground combat, adding academies for both Fed and KDF, and adding shuttlebays to your ships. You'll now be able to change ships from your own bridge.
As I said, I'm really enjoying myself.

I tried it a long time ago and just didn't enjoy it. Takes WAY to much time to raid and group. Can't just log in and kill shite for an hour and then log out. Much more preparation needed. Much rather the fast paced action of FPS.. Quake 1, Counterstrike, Battlefields, etc. I did like starcraft and if they were to come out with a Starcraft based MMORPG i would give it a shot

Although I like the concept, and I agree, it probably makes everything more rewarding, I would argue most people would not have the time to spend reacquiring gear they already obtained. And losing an item that is considered rare or took an enormous amount of time and effort to obtain would just be soul-crushing.
But anyway if anyone starts up WoW again or first timers, hit me up on Firetree I don't mind helping you get started (ie gold, quest assistance, etc.)
