A cheap video card wont last over a better one.

I get that use to be the case but I think the price/performance has caught up to 1080p where the cheaper cards are just good buys right now. At 1080p gaming, the majority of people I think run the gtx 1060 6GB. 1660 is faster than that and plenty of games get over 120-144fps from it.

Scenario 1
GTX 1660 at around 200
1080p monitor at 144hz 160
Total 360

Pros: Instant gratification and much better experience at 120+fps in almost all games depending on settings that are not "single player visual experience titles".
Cons: Not 1440p
Notes: 1660 can still run 1440p but MAY not be at 144 depending on game and settings. If wanting visual type single player, 60-100 is very sufficient anyway

Scenario 2
RTX 2060 or 5700 XT 350-400
No monitor and upgrade later
Total 400-700

Pros: Much better GPU, will be higher at 1080p and 1440p when finally purchased
Cons: Will not be able to see any gain from purchase until new monitor comes in. Cost of monitor later either 170 for 1080p/144hz or 300 for 1440p/144hz
Notes: Gaming experience will ultimately be unchanged until a new monitor is purchased

Plus he plays Fortnite so a 1060 gets over 120 on low settings anyway on 1080p and 1440p.
