Xbox 360 game download question

Our neighbors gave our kids an older Xbox. I think they got the latest one and the 360 wasn’t being used. They told us to leave his account signed in so we could have access to the games that are on it. Now my kids want some $10 racing game but I’m not sure where to begin to purchase it or download it. I assume he has all his payment info in his profile. But could I buy this from Amazon and get the download code, then load it on the Xbox? Any steps I might be missing in there? Thanks.

I haven't messed with XBOX live in a while. But you may be able to buy a Xbox Live points card from Amazon (get the code instantly) or Walmart. Add the balance to his existing account and use that to purchase the game.
