Yep

Yea being that my main course is Santa Maria, playing rounds and practicing, their membership plans kinda maneuver around what would work best for me. I’d be ALL OVER the 5 course 4 day plan if it included SM instead of BC.

Drove by Webble at lunch. People were out playing, but the crowd has thinned tremendously. Who would thunkit.
Beyond stopping some of us from playing everyday, reopening likely cleared out the guys who don't normally golf that were just doing it for fun bc it was free. Saw a lot of threesome with one bag. As much as they definitely needed to reopen and get cash flowing, BR golf would have been better served had those people kept playing and got addicted. Wish there was a way to grow the game like that naturally.

You will never grow anything giving it away. If people don't have skin in the game (money) they will never take it seriously. If cheap golf being basically given away made golf better then South Louisiana would be the Mecca of golf. Pros would be coming out of here left and right.
But the fact is, if people are only playing because it is free or super cheap then they will never be a real growth engine for the sport. There is a reason BREC wants to close courses and the Island closed. Cheap golf isn't a great thing for the sport.

Cheap golf may not be good for the business of golf, but it is good for the sport of golf. Setting the barrier of entry too high does nothing but discourage participants.

The barrier isn't high in Baton Rouge and whether anyone likes it or not if the business of golf sucks then the sport of golf will suck. But, again and I repeat, golf is already cheap in Baton Rouge.

You can play everyday, all day at Webb, City Park, Dumas, and Clark for $54 a month. Unlimited.

But your one off round is $35-$40 plus clubs and balls, etc. The barrier feels really high and scares people away. "Free golf" just seemed like a nice hook to draw people in.

If they are only playing because it is free then you do not want them anyway. Now if you are talking about getting kids involved then I am all ears. But, adults are going to have to pay for recreation. Hunting, Fishing, LSU Sports, Camping, etc...
There is not mythical adult segment that will grow golf that is only looking for that free taste.
I know people that spend a lot of money and all they do is Run.

For the record, since I have been discussing how broken BR Golf is on this site we have lost:
Sherwood
Howell Park
9 holes at Pelican Point
The Island
Westside Golf Club
If you still think the model of cheap golf is workable then I cannot wait for your evidence.
Edited to removed DSGC

When did Denham Springs Country Club lose 9 holes?
Posted on 4/30/20 at 6:39 pm to htcthc321
Denham has always had 9 holes as long as I can remember. It is now called The Pines.

That was the point I was making. It's actually doing much better since PARDS took over.
Posted on 4/30/20 at 7:02 pm to htcthc321
Ah. I thought they converted to a 9 hole from 18 when they took over.

You have seen their before and after financials?

No it's always been 9 holes with two different sets of tees. I'm not privy to their financials, I was speaking more of the overall conditions and amount of golfers that frequent it now (even prior to the shutdown). In the past, it wasn't uncommon to share the course with 1-3 people in total and pay $20 to play all day

It is much better then say 5-10 years ago. It used to be a swamp, water seems to drain better. But hey are working the greens now. Sanded them, which is helping.

Yes, but none of that means they are financially stable. I am sure similar to BREC it matters little...since they are government owned.

You should edit to add all the courses that you missed. I count 3.
But there is a difference between good golf business and growing the game. If there was a way to get people to try golf without the hassle of green fees, etc. that's a good thing. I don't think adults should have free golf all the time. But having free access to an expensive game could get people hooked. I don't know that it is possible.
Also, I've played DSCC twice in the last three months. I think I get worse every time I go out there.

Didn't know Westside was closed. Used to play there a lot.
