We need more good golf in Louisiana. North LA has so much potential just based off soils and topography alone. This project really seems like it’s showing how it’s done. Using native soils as “bunkers,” having one length cut of grass, not having to install draining, etc. makes the maintenance way less of a burden. I think it’s safe to say that the cost of maintenance for south LA clubs are probably double what something like this would cost to upkeep. Not that budget is an issue for these guys, but if you were to build something, this would be the model.

Seeing those photos makes you realize how nice The Bluffs could be.

I get that , but i think The Bluffs are a relic of the past. The biggest drawback for the bluffs is that it’s a neighborhood development course. The guy who is trying to revamp it is trying to market it as a national membership, but i hate to break it to you, no one from out of the area is going to want to join a neighborhood golf course. The Bluffs is a look into the industry of golf course development of the 80s and 90s. Essentially golf was put there to sell real estate and houses to make a profit. Thank God those days are behind us, as the golf itself is the driving force, not for some guy to sell houses. Not even to mention that Arnold Palmer Design is no longer as of last week. I think West Fel would be better off in just building a brand new golf course instead of throwing money into the bottomless pit of money, that is the bluffs.

I can’t imagine how much it costs to run a championship caliber golf course these days. It has to be almost impossible to break even unless you’re in a high-population or resort area.

My man just said all that ever needs to be said about The Bluffs.

This is another issue. Everyone wants a championship caliber course, but for what? No pros are going to play there. This is an issue with so many golf course developments and golf course architecture in general. Courses should be designed for fun, strategic play that is welcoming and fun for high handicaps and difficult for low. This is why Robert Trent Jones and his philosophy led to horrible golf courses to be designed for 50 years. His philosophy is a hard par, with no strategy, just execution. Everyone is obsessed with 7200 yards and a hard boring golf. This just adds unneeded upkeep and expenses for the course. I think development should be more focused on working with what you’ve got. For example tom doaks new project at Sand Valley,(Sedge Valley) should be a model for developers. It’s gonna be a par 68 around 5000-6000 yards, but that doesn’t mean it’s short. You’re going to be challenged in a strategic way and hit every club in the bag. Again, these courses are wide open with big fairways and it’s not penal, but it challenges the low handicaps because if they want to go low they have to play angles and hit it the right spot.
In short: when is it ever fun to go lose a bunch of golf balls at a “championship course” and you feel beat up after.

I try when I can. I’m just a guy who’s fed up with the golf in louisiana. I’m always open to discourse on architecture and courses when there is some posted
