I lived in Nashville and their public courses and state park courses would rival every private course in Louisiana.
I just got back from Ohio and I’d add them to that list. $48 for a public course we walked onto. Better than any course in LA I’ve played in years.

I go out of town and play golf it’s $50 with plush fairways and great greens. I come home it’s $80 with concrete fairways and ok greens.
I don’t mind paying premium dollar to play if it’s in premium condition.
That’s just Louisiana though. Taxes are high with shitty roads. Other places have great roads with low taxes.
The other issue is there’s not much competition for courses. Not many courses around. Florida has courses on every other block. Played Florida State university course years ago. Condition was equivalent to pelican point. It was $22 including a hotdog and a coke.

MS green fees are much higher at public amd semi-private courses.
Go price The Oaks, Diamonhead and The Bridges for a random Saturday or Sunday.
Then go price Covington Country Club, Oak Harbor and Royal.
Yes, it's higher in Mississippi but the quality is not even comparable for the slight increase in cost. People in Louisiana bitching about the cost for public golf isn't just about the cost it's about what you get for the cost. The return for most places in Louisiana SUCKS. Other places in the region deal with the similar climate issues and the same socioeconomic base but somehow find a way to deliver quality products at competitive prices and still thrive financially.
Go even beyond course conditions - Diamondhead, Bridges and The Oaks all have practice facilities, beverage and snack carts and an ambiance that offers post round lunch, beers, etc.
Covington has no practice area outside of literally, the worst "Putting green" I have ever seen in my life, no on course cart offerings, no post round social scene whatsever...shite, they don't even have a clubhouse.
Royal has a bar and friendly staff with good beer prices but it smells like cigarette smoke and doesnt have much in the way of food.
Oak Harbor has a clubhouse with beer and cocktails no food.
Not one of them has an on-course bathroom.
St Tammany public golf is a shitshow

Let me correct a few errors:
There is no putting green, they do have a post round area for drinks and very good food back by the pool on the river. Crawfish every Fri, Sat & Sun.
And the membership for unlimited golf is only $190/month

it’s the shitty greens and service at Beaver Creek
I saw pictures. Those greens are BAD!!!!!
Even if we can look passed that, there’s no excuse for shitty service anywhere at any time. It takes no effort to be polite at minimum.

I talked to a guy yesterday that said Riverlands is in good shape. Can anyone confirm that review?

My FIL is a member there and he’s told me it in very good shape.

I think some of you, Louisiana public course boys need to check yourself with regard to your complaints and expectations of the local courses.
In high School and college my Dad was a member of Beau Chen and Belle Terre. My step Father was member of Congressional Country Club. I have played at a public course in Vegas at the time was a 1,000 dollar green fee named Shadow Creek. Look it up I did not pay a dime to play there. But now I play Public and private clubs. You can take that corn cobb out your uppity arse. But if I want to bitch about playing a course that has an over priced fee. I will and you can go where ever you want an act like you are somebody. Good for you.

Maybe if Louisiana was not the poorest state which is also ran by a governor who hurts our primary financial industry (oil & gas), people would thrive and be able to afford higher prices for golf.

Spot on. In fact reading your post thinks we may even play together here in STP
Me and my boys routinely drive into MS to play. The value is so much better there
And I don't even consider Covington Country Club a golf course anymore. When you can't putt on a majority of the greens due to dead spots and sand pits, it's hardly golf. And it's not like they're charging $30 either

What's an out of state watersound membership run if you're a property owner?
Last I heard initiation was around 40k, this still about right?

When the weather is nice and I was strapped for time I would sometimes walk it as a substitute for a range day. Inside of 3’ I took a one putt. 3’-10’ I would alternate taking one and not the other just for the purpose of “scoring” something on my Garmin. Over 10’, if I hit the center of the putter or close to it I counted it as a 2 putt.
But, I would work on things when I was there that I may not work on if I was at the range…playing in a low 7 iron rather than a full 9, cutting the corner with a big high fade on 17 with my driver, etc.
Outside of that, it’s an abomination and really just a range day.

I live in Covington and am a member at CCC. It is a mess and a travesty that they charge more than $25/rnd.
The fact that CCC & Carter Plantations green fees are only a $20 difference is insane. If CCC can charge $65/round than CP can get away with $250.

Your GA friends could play the public courses here, they are anywhere from 35ish to 100 depending on course. The courses here are usually in great shape and rounds take about 4 here on occasion a bit longer.

Yea this is what I can’t understand. The costs to keep up Carter Plantation are obviously waaaay more than CCC. The course is almost always in great shape. How do they make it on the small amount they charge?
