How do you manage miles/workload during the season with kids?
I learned a lot about prepping for an individual race last year but what about when you have races like 6 of the next nine weeks?
For my daughter was running mostly low 20 miles over the summer with a couple of high 20 weeks. Should she try to stay in that low 20 range during the season or taper down a little freshness on race weeks?
Anybody else with knowledge obviously free to chime in.

No need to taper down from anything in the 20s. Does she have a coach through school or are you coaching her? Racing that frequently, I’d advise treating the first few races as hard workouts, i.e. focus on specific milestones each race instead of trying to PR every time out. E.g. if her PR is 7:00 pace try to run the first two miles evenly at 7:10 then blast the last mile. Set manageable goals early in the season when it is hot to boost confidence knowing that fast times will come later.

Three of my kids run XC (one in college) and their coach only cares about the last two races of the year - each other race is practically a workout and freshness is never given until mid October.

I'm pretty sure Jack Daniels recommends treating in-season cross country races as another quality workout for the week. I wouldn't taper for her weekly races other than doing a pre-meet workout the day before. Until it gets to district, regionals, and state, don't worry about it. Peak for those races and let the mid-season stuff act as a workout and learning race strategy.

She's in 8th grade but ran a lot with the high school this summer.
She's running with her middle school program now and the coach is an awesome guy and knows his stuff but the program is definitely more tilted toward fun and getting/keeping numbers up, which is fine but some of the more serious runners need/want a little extra so I try to help her supplement.

Your daughter needs to speak directly to her coach and tell him her goals and what she wants to do, both this season and in HS. There is nothing wrong with you giving her supplemental assistance/training, but it should align with what her coach is programming.
Also, I would bet the coach already knows your daughter may be able to handle more work, but is waiting for her to step up a say it. Last, as a few other posted have suggested it might be as simple as the coach working with her on a specific plan for her next 6 races and use those as training runs. From my experience a lot of 8th graders might not be ready for that level of programming, but if she is good for her.
