Interesting that so many posts are comparing a chosen product versus the Big Green Egg.

I use my Large Egg 3-5 times a week for probably 10 years. From smoking to grilling. Zero complaints. It does exactly what I want it to do every time.

Its a side gig Louisiana gift basket company, not something that I ever saw me being involved with but its been fun . I use that to get certain kinds of items (mostly cooking) to hook up TD peeps as a side to the side gig. I got my 2 Primos that way years ago so im just doing the same in return.

The way I look at it BGE is the OG and Primo was the "copy"...I think both work and are built pretty much the same standard way. I dont know that id get a BGE of a Primo XL due to the oval shape....but i have no experience being around the larger round ones.

KJ I think is a newer brand and has some newer tec built into there grills. If I were looking I would be between a Primo XL or a KJ flavor something IMO. Nothing against BGE...

i bought a kamado joe last Christmas. dollar for dollar you get alot more for it compared to the BGE. i believe you can get the same sizes for both brands. as others mentioned there are alot of accessories for both now. Ace hardware typically carries BGE and shoppers choice and home depot carry accessories for the joe.

I bought the KJ last October to replace a 50-60 year old Imperial Kamado I was given by my father in law. I did a lot of restoration to it, but after about two years of weekly cooking, it gave up the ghost. I looked at all different brands BGE, Vision and Kamado Joe. I liked the Primo but no where near me was a dealer in order to get one. Quickly took Vision off the list due to the warranty issues I had read about. I ultimately went with the KJ because it comes with the standard stuff you would need for smoking that I would have had to buy separate by going with the BGE. Plus the modular firebox in my opinion will lead to less cracking than the solid firebox offered by BGE. I have been happy with the KJ accessories most of which have been purchased through amazon. I also bought my KJ at Lowes when they were running a 12 months no interest promotion at the time. I don't believe either of them are better than the other basically just comes down to price and what you are looking for.

For those that have the old band, email BGE customer service and they’ll likely swap it out for you. I got mine yesterday

What did you say in the email? Was it no cost?

I was having trouble with the lid closing and the springs had begun catching/popping. I reinstalled the bands and it did not help the situations. Took them a couple weeks to respond, but once they did I picked up a new set the next day. No charge...covered under the warranty.

how old is your BGE? I was reading that the new hinge (released about 3 years ago maybe?) might limit how much the dome opens. I saw pic of one and it looks like it's a significant difference. Did you notice anything like this?

5 years? The new hinge does decrease the opening simply because you're going from a traditional clam shell design to something that articulates both up and back. But it doesn't really effect the quantity or size of what is being cooked

Weber kettle can do it all, no reason to spend $1000 on a charcoal grill unless you just want status symbol

Yeah, my grill is totally about status. It's how I judge my self-worth.

I thought I was the only one.

That said, I praised KJ in this thread but its looking like I was wrong. The kamado is cooks really well, but I've found some quality issues I'm trying to address with their customer service. Its been almost a month and I think they're ignoring me now. The ceramic is chipping away around the rim and grinding behind the lower band. I only found this because I could hear a grinding noise when raising and lowering the dome. Their initial response to me is that this wont affect the performance, but I expect my new kamado not to be cracking. I'm going to keep after them, but this is definitely disappointing customer service.

He's got the primo hookup. If you plan to buy one definitely check with him.
