One thing I’ve noticed on my okra, once I got rid of the ants, I no longer see any aphids. I know they have sort of a symbiotic relationship, so maybe there’s a correlation. Or maybe it’s because I’ve been seeing a bunch of these gals roaming around on them.

So I just winged it on the salsa. Roasted tomatoes (about 20 mixed between Indian Stripe & Cherokee Carbon heirloom, some Best Boy and sun gold cherry & red grape) and peppers (three japs and four red serranos) on broil on the top rack.

Fined chopped some spare white onion and red onion.

Pulled the last of the cilantro out of the garden and combined it with the tomatoes and peppers in the blender and just pulsed it a few times. Added some garlic powder and plain salt.

Came out nice. Pretty hot but not painfully hot at all. I'm sure some time marinating will have the heat turned up.

I will say roasting the tomatoes and peppers in the oven is smart because you cook out a lot of water. When I had picked the tomatoes off the pan it was just clear water. Didn't lose anything from the tomatoes as far as I could see and taste.

Next up, pickling cucumbers.

My eggplants still haven't produced one fruit.

Tomatoes are starting to suffer. Although the tops of the cherry tomatoes are still going strong. I wonder how my much more diligent pruning of suckers affected production.

I feel like these plants aren't lasting as long. But fruit production seems as good or better but feels worse. I know that sounds strange. I guess time flies or this heat is just hitting the tomatoes all of the sudden.

Lime tree going strong with the limes it decided to hold onto.

Potatoes look rough so I think it's time to dump em out and see what got produced.

I'm of the same opinion. Matter of fact, I took out my pole beans yesterday after a week+ of not much in the way of harvest and starting to fade fast.

My tomatoes will be next once the remaining green tomatoes show signs of ripening a bit on the vines. They are looking real sad right now.

As are the cucumbers that are still producing, but the cukes are more misshapen than standard looking and the foliage is yellowing from the ground up.

At least I'll still have my eggplant, bell and hot peppers left.

Peppers will keep going especially in the fall. I got my eggplant in late. Ready to rip out the tomatoes.

Yeah, I've been having a backyard garden for close to 40 years of my life and in every one of the 3 houses I've had over the years.

Peppers and okra are 2 of my biggest producers when it gets hot and I leave the peppers in the ground until a frost gets them or they overwinter and come back the following spring.

Okra is removed by mid September and I'll have enough of that to last me the whole year stewed down and frozen or canned.

Damn, that's a lot of corn to shuck and put away for later.

I don't grow corn in my relatively small backyard garden. It's only five rows 50 ft. long and I did grow it one year with mild success and when Rouses put their bi-color corn on sale for 10 ears for $1, I decided it wasn't much use in planting corn.

However, if I lived out in the country and space wasn't a problem, I probably would grow several rows in a block to make sure it pollinates properly.

I planted 5 rows 165 foot long then two weeks later planted 5 more rows so I wouldn’t have to deal with it all at one time

Damn, you don't have a garden, you have a farm.

You're not tilling all that land with a tiller, so I'll assume you are using some type tractor with attachments.

Or you could do like some hippie friends of mine did back in the early 70's. They did it with a mule and plow for their 1/2 acre garden

My cucumbers are pretty much tapped out. Is there anything I can plant in it's place at this point in the season?

Regular red potatoes - I just left in a bowl on the counter for a few weeks. Worked fine.

Speaking of cucumbers, would a good amount of rain in a relatively short period of time, like over the course of a week, cause them to get fatter than usual and remain a yellowish color instead of turning green? I picked my first three the other day. Two of them were normal, maybe 6-8 inches long and rather skinny. The third looked like a loaf of bread. I'm guessing it was one of the early flowers and the rain caused it to get yuge. Several flowers have started growing cucumbers now, and they all appear normal. Just this one. Will it green up if I let it sit for a few days? Planning on a big batch of pickles in about a week or so when I have enough.
