I’m in BR and used GenPro for generator and installation. It took about 6 months for delivery and install due to the wait for the generator. They were very highly rated on the Kohler site and they handle the maintenance and service too. Was the best experience i’ve had with any type of vendor/ contractor ever.

I went with Kohler 38kw water-cooled. It’s very quiet. Also got a whole home surge protector. It was a lot of money, and i never thought i’d get one due to cost versus how frequently i’d use it. However, aging parents made me change my mind. I got it so they can come here and comfortable during extended outages. One has early dementia and the last extended outage was tough on her.

Costco had this in an email to me yesterday. No idea on the quality but everything I’ve ever gotten from Costco has been fine.

Looking for one as well. Received a quote last week for a 30KW Cummins ~15k + install

30KW? You powering a neighborhood? 22KW runs my entire household and it costed $10K for everything.
Where they get you is on the maintenance plan to support the warranty. Basically, if you don't have them come out to change oil and filter at least once per year the warranty is voided.

Just get 2-3 2500 watt inverter generators and don’t bother with running the AC.

The less expensive Generac’s that most folks buy are air-cooled, higher rpm motors that are quite loud.

The less expensive units of any brand will have air cooled 3600rpm engines.

The more expensive Cummins are typically water cooled, lower-rpm (hence quieter) 4-cylinder auto engines.

The more expensive units of any brand will have liquid cooled 1800rpm engines.

Just so anyone isnt confused, cummins makes cheap stuff and generac makes expensive stuff. They all do.

You are not getting a 22-25kw liquid cooled generator installed for anywhere close to $10k. There is a significant reliability gap between air cooled units and liquid cooled units.

If you have significant tonnage of a/c (3+ units) and built in appliances, 22kw isn't sufficient. 25kw is pushing it depending on appliance load.

My power hardly ever goes out so I just can’t justify the cost of a whole house generator plus install. In 2020, I paid an electrician to install an interlock kit and portable generator receptacle to my main panel outside.

Same except I did the wiring myself because my setup made it extremely simple. Only thing I would have done different is to run 50A instead of 30A. It is an easy fix though when I decide to upgrade my generator.

My 22Kw is air cooled and it runs a 5-ton A/C unit as well as electric water heater, dryer and built in appliances. 8 days straight after Ida with no problems.
And yes, it cost me $10,000 in 2018

I’m sure there are plenty of folks who have 22kw air cooled generators that are perfectly happy with them and have had no issues for their specific application. I’ve also said in nearly every post I’ve made in this thread that I was referring to a liquid cooled unit, and there is a huge cost difference between a liquid cooled unit and an air cooled unit. It’s also a fact that an air cooled unit running in August heat is going to be less reliable than a liquid cooled unit running under the same conditions. 5 tons is also not “significant a/c tonnage.” My house has 9. Others have more.

You’re missing the point that different people have completely different circumstances/applications than you do. I kinda feel like you’re trying to make an argument here just to argue.

Normal people don't have 3+ ac units in their house.

Even if I had 3+ ac units I would only need to power one during an extended outage but if I had the coin for a house that required 3 ac units I probably wouldn't care about the extra cost.

There are guys running their entire house on 13k portables with transfer switches and interlocks INCLUDING 5ton A/C units with hard start kits. That is probably the next evolution for me. I don't see sending $10k for a crappy air cooled unit or $20k+ for a nice 1800 rpm generator when I can get a $1500 generator that will run what I need to for the time I need it to.

Not missing the point...I get you. Mine is not liquid cooled so it naturally won't be as costly as yours. Just putting it out there that a 22Kw that services whole house can be had for around $10,000, though it will be air cooled.
Not trying to argue, either. You seem very knowledgable and I respect that.

things get lost in cyberspace translation and I agree with both you and the post immediately prior. Every application is different and cost has to be a factor. Installed, some of these things can cost as much as a car.

I was just offering opinions re: the 30kw because OP mentioned.

Team generac. A lot of people shite on them, a lot of people also don’t maintain them. I had an issue with mine for Ida but figured out my gas company had my regulator set too low. Once we figured that out and made the adjustment, it ran absolutely fine for a week and a half without missing a beat.

My neighbor just had a whole house Generac installed and overheard someone as him how much it cost and his reply was simply "Too damn much" but he does have peace of mind if he loses power------as long as he doesn't lose NG service that is

That peace of mind which is HUGE because that is what I would want after roughin it through Andrew, katrina and ida.. Also my new home is in the country.

It's 2023

We did a test on my house and a 25k was suggested. Could have went 30kw but it was 6 months wait for it. 25kw was a 1 month wait. I went with the 25kw. 10 tons of a/c and the guy said 25kw is enough. Hopefully it is

How would someone ask somebody else how much they paid. His answer should have been none of your frickin business. What kind of dumbass ask another person how much they paid for something. If they wanted you to know they would have told you
