Yeah. It would be extremely hard to play Div 1 football and get any kind of engineering degree. The freshman weed out classes will be brutal. I, too, commend the ambition though.

He has two HUGE advantages over the average engineering major.

First, he's a very bright guy. He's in the running to be his high school's valedictorian, and the high school is in Ohio.

Second, he won't be just an average student trying to make it through class with the help of a few classmates and some visits to the professor. LSU will provide a tremendous amount of educational support for him. He'll have access to an extensive support system that most students just don't have.

If he wants to be a Petroleum Engineer, LSU would be the best choice for many reasons.

Most likely would redshirt during the freshman weed out classes, right? Or does Les not believe in redshirting?

.... Right, because the average engineering major isn't very smart. Also, being the valedictorian of his high school doesn't really mean much when your high school has a total enrollment of only about 500-600 students.

But you're on the right track about the advantages from increased educational support provided through tutoring and what not.

At LSU, he wouldn't enter the College of engineering until he amassed a certain # of hours; I think it's 30, or used to be. It's the sophomore and junior years that would be toughest I think. However, LSU does a couple of things really well with our FB program, and providing academic support is one of them. He will have to go to class, but if he goes to class and turns in his assignments, it's a very good chance he will graduate with a PE degree.

I majored in EE at LSU. I have some understanding of the average PETE major. The average one is not a valedictorian.

It might mean a lot more in Ohio than Louisiana, but let's not quibble. The kid is bright, and he apparently has his priorities straight. He should do well.

ETA: Earning a PETE degree with any GPA while playing football at LSU will guarantee him an interview for any entry level job, and it will go a long way to getting him that job.

This is 100% true. Would show an incredible work ethic.

Les will redshirt linebackers. Probably the one position he isn't as quick to throw extremely young talented players out there on defense.

Not only a great PE program at LSU, but also right in the heart of job country for that industry.

This is what I am thinking. This would be a hell of a pick up.

Yeah it would be tough to get a PE degree from LSU while playing football. Then again, look at all the medical doctors who played sports at LSU. Even a few vetenarians. Think getting an engineering degree is tough? Try qualifying for med or vet school as an undergraduate! If you doubt what I say, ask anyone who took ORGCHEM 1 or ORGCHEM 2.

Not 30. You can take certain courses that qualify as engineering courses without being in the engineering college. Typically, it's your junior year, after 60 hours, that you would begin to enter specific colleges. Sometimes, in such cases as H&SS college, you don't enter until you have accumulated 90 hours. But H&SS college is a senior college, so that might be why it requires 90 hours.

It can be done my Son was a ME major, single father, worked full time on weekends and had a 3.70 grade point. So this kid can do it and play football.
