Buzz Up PrintSacramento (Calif.) City Community College defensive tackle Akiem Hicks racked up several big offers early in the recruiting process, but a recent offer from one SEC program has specifically caught the 6-6, 300-pound prospect’s attention.

“LSU just offered me and that’s a pretty appetizing offer,” Hicks reported. “They gave me a call one day and they said they were interested in offering me.

“Coach (D.J.) McCarthy and Earl Lane, the defensive line coach, they came down to see my Modesto game and after that they offered. My personality, for one, and my drive, my aggressiveness and just how I play the game they said was a factor.

“They told me that they don’t recruit a lot of JC guys and I am the only JC guy they are going to be recruiting. They told me they just like my game, period.”

Hicks had previously received scholarship offers from Arizona, Oregon, Purdue, South Florida, Tennessee and Washington. The offer from LSU, however, has changed the way Hicks currently views his recruitment.

“It changes it tremendously,” Hicks said. “This puts (LSU) up in the top few.”

An official visit to LSU has been scheduled for the weekend of Nov. 22. He has already taken one official visit and plans at least one more outside of his trip to Baton Rouge in November.

“I went up to Oregon on Aug. 1 and I think I might be going to Tennessee on the 8th of November,” Hicks said. “Immediately after these trips I am going to try to make my decision. How I gel with the coaches and the overall communication factor with the coaches, that’s a big thing with me.”

Originally from Del Campo High School in Carmichael, Calif., Hicks will be a spring graduate and has three years to play out his two remaining seasons of eligibility. He prefers the three-technique defensive tackle position and is averaging 5-6 tackles a game from that position for Sacramento City this fall.

Hicks is also impressive in the weight room, where he boasts a 365-pound bench press and 630-pound squat. He reports a time of 4.89 in the 40-yard dash.

JMac has a spot saved, Scouts JUCO guy has Hicks as the top DE/DT combo player in the country

It's not that I think McFarland lost his spot, but that the coaches may not feel very confident about McFarland. Of course seeing that he's 6'6" has me thinking they prefer him at DE.

Or offensive line. We have done that with several players going back to Saban days.

Per rivals: 6'6" 295 pounds and runs a 4.89/40. That sound like a pretty good combination

This is shocking, wa she on anybody's radar? Never heard of him before. He's not rated on rivals yet (sleeper?) 6'6 300 is huge. I guess the coaches feel like they're losing out on Campbell, McFarland and Sentimore

Or maybe this is the 2nd DE we were looking for (kind of Tyson Jackson size) in this class? He's quick according to rivals (4.89).

Yeah, I started a thread on Juco's a while back because I thought we'd get him or Pierre-Paul.

So is he the 2nd DE we're looking for or have we given up on McFarland/Campbell/Sentimore at DT?

I think he could play strong side DE or DT, ala Tyson Jackson. Campbell is coming in soon, and could play DT ot OT, and really McFarland is a DT that is also quick enough to be a SDE...So, that being said there's spots a room to add those 2 guys due to their value and versatility.

As I said even if we like him at DT it says more about RJF than any recruit.

If RJF goes we are left with

Woods
Nevis
Favorite

As upperclassmen DTs.

Favorite is a body not much more. We still don't know what Woods will do in a system that doesn't fit him. Nevis has been promising.

Hicks would solidify that rotation with some So. and Fr. to complement.

Correct. Don't know why I thought he was a junior.

Even then that solidifies the argument.

Hicks would give us a third experienced DT to go with whatever underclassmen get time.

Also as people have said he could play SDE in some packages.

I don't understand why people think RJF will go pro. Sure, before the season he was supposed to break-out and be Dorsey part 2 but he's been injured this year and has played fairly average when he has played. Check out his stat line...

13 tackles, 1 sack, 2 passes defended

Would he even get drafted???

this looks like a pretty good pickup. i just hope rivals makes him a 4 star. i'm way too emotionally invested in the ranking of this recruiting class to be ok with anything other than a 4 at this point

HE hates school and he should put on a show at the combine.

RJF will go lower (2nd or 3rd round) than he thinks he should go. For better or worse, he has "character issues" and was unproductive. The combine will matter but there are enough productive DLs with good measurables that no one is going to bank their first round pick on a project.

That doesn't mean RJF won't continue his streak of good decisions. It just means he should come back and prove he's more than Mike Mamula.

He would have to put up OUTSTANDING numbers to even be considered for the first few rounds. I mean his play and stat line this year are just plain weak.

365 is terrible if that is indeed what his max is.. not arguing with the pickup but that is terrible upper body strength for a guy of his stature..i'm 5'll 190 and can almost bench that... wonder how this will affect al woods cuz it's very unusual to have two 6'5 / 6'6 dt's on the field at the same time
