LSU wasn't the destination that it is today.

In addition there was a race baiter in Baton Rouge, George Eames, I think that was his name, who tried to poison the mind of all top AA athletes away from LSU.
That was the story at the time. :dono:
Maybe some athlete from that period can either verify or debunk the story.

Charles Johnson was a big reason why, too.

It took Saban to stop the mass exodus, he wasn't getting Reed from Curtis Johnson after year 1
Plus LSU wasn't on Miami's level in enticing recruits with benefits during that time period.

Curly was a horrible coach. The NOLA high school coaches didn’t like him either. He lost a ton of talent Between 91-94, although he recruited well out of state. IMO, Dinardo did a better job , especially in Acadiana and North La, but he never really ingratiated himself to the NOLA coaches. As a result, many great players went to Tenn, Miami, FSU, Colorado, etc. during that period.

To be fair, he was a qb, rb, wr, db, punt returner, kick returner, special teams player.

He did win the state qb challenge competition though.

I remember Miami coming into Death Valley and stomping a pretty good LSU team. Not a good memory and don't ever want to go back to those days!

Same reason we let Warrick Dunn and Marshall Faulk out of state - LSU did not focus on keeping talent in-state. Nick Saban was the change to that, and Ed made it a priority.

YouTube it, he just did an interview with bleacher reporter like a day ago. He briefly addressed his decision to leave the state

Jerry Stovall and Pete Jenkins had NOLA and the rest of the state locked up. That's how Arnsparger and Archer had success. neither of those two were good recruiters. Dinardo did pretty good in state, look at his classes, plenty of in state and NOLA kids, but LSU was so far behind it was tough to catch up. Saban lost instate talent too.
Saban lost:
Robert Peace- Tenn
Brock berlin- Miami
Roydell Williams- Tulane
Lynarise Elphage- Tulane
Brandon jacobs- Auburn
Brent Rawls- OU
Jason Mitchell- A&M
Akeem Jolla- Miami
Thad Washington- Colorado
Ryan Watson- USCw

Auburn: Roymon Malcolm

Trevon Reed and Greg Robinson from Thibodaux. Since when did anyone from Thibodaux ever go to an SEC school in Alabama? Who was their lead recruiter at Auburn? It was some slime ball that wore his warm ups and ball cap like a gangster rapper.

That was back in the blueprint days of the LSU Death Star. Miami had been a dynasty for damn near 25 years by that time. It was still the marquee program
