If Wilson had been on our staff last year, Trovon Reed wouldn't be an Auburn commit and Freak Johnson wouldn't be a Tennessee commit.

So is there any chance that we can get Anthony Johnson to flip? It sounds like he's not so solid to Tennessee anymore, is that a fair assumption?

It's only a matter of time.

Thanks Cash.

Anybody who has seen Alfred Blue play wanna give their opinion of him? I've watched some of his highlight tapes and he reminds me of Mike Bell. Downhill runner who likes creating contact.

am i missing something?

Part 1

High School coaches excited about Wilson hiring

With Larry Porter leaving LSU to take the head coaching job at his alma mater Memphis, LSU was in the market for a new running backs coach. No official search was opened, but rumors spread.

Then word began to surface that Les Miles would hire Frank Wilson as his next running backs coach. This was when most of the New Orleans high school coaching community began to call each other. Was it true? Was LSU hiring Frank?
Known to the New Orleans community as just “Frank”, the coaches in the Crescent City don’t just like Frank Wilson. He is beloved.

To say they are excited by this move is an understatement.

“As good as LSU is, this just makes them that much better. For LSU to bring in a guy who knows what Louisiana football is, that says a lot.” McDonough 35 Head Coach Wayne Reese said.

Added Karr head Coach Jabar Juluke, “I think that’s a great hire. He’s a guy that is going to be at a very high level for LSU. I think very highly of Frank. It’s a huge advantage for LSU that they have Frank. He is not just a great recruiter he is a very good coach and a very hard worker. He’s unbelievably organized, and wants to be successful at the highest level. He’s now got the opportunity to not just sell himself, and what he knows as a product of Louisiana, but now he is selling Louisiana State football. He’s a very proud person of his background of being from Louisiana, and now he’s a part of the best program in the state.”

Juluke said Wilson’s work ethic is known throughout the coaching community.” He’s going to put in his hard work and dedication, and he’s going to be up working before you get up and working after you go to sleep.”

Added St. Aug Head Coach David Johnson enthusiastically, “Nobody in the country is going to outwork Frank Wilson, please quote me on that. I guarantee it. Nobody.”

That work ethic will help the LSU program from the top to bottom. And not just in metro New Orleans.

“It’s good news for the whole state, not just New Orleans. With LSU bringing Frank in it just makes LSU stronger.” Reese said. “It’s essential for LSU to have players from New Orleans, and if you look at the players that Ole Miss and USM had from New Orleans they were all brought there by Frank. Look at the Louisiana kids that Tennessee is recruiting, they’re all because of Frank.”

Johnson said having Wilson on LSU’s side, instead of having to go head to head with him, could be the best benefit of this move.

“I feel safe in saying that Louisiana is locked down. It’s going to be impossible for schools to come in and get top kids. Teams might be able to get what LSU doesn’t want, but coming in to Louisiana and getting top kids is impossible.” Johnson said.

Juluke added, “It’s now extremely hard for teams to come into Louisiana and get players. He made it hard when he didn’t work for LSU. Now, it’s going to be impossible. He knows everything about Louisiana football, he’s from the same culture as these kids. They have the same background. It’s unbeatable.”

Johnson and Juluke have worked with Wilson as assistants when Wilson was the head coach at O. Perry Walker. Both still remain very close to Wilson.

All of the coaches we talked to said this is not just a good move for Frank Wilson and his family, but for LSU and Les Miles too.

“This says that Les Miles cares about winning,” Juluke said. “Frank has huge shoes to fill in Larry Porter, and for Coach Miles to hire a guy like Frank who has the same type of personality as Coach Porter, and a hometown guy, that’s even better.”

“Frank Wilson is one of the best recruiters in the nation, and he’s going to be felt immediately at LSU.” Johnson said. “Frank is one of the most organized coaches I have ever been around. He’s the guy who checks to make sure he’s dotted every I and crossed every T. He is not going to lose anybody. This is a great move by Les Miles.”

Reese pointed out that this hire does not just focus on Miles desire to win, but that coaches recognize the quality that Miles has had on his staffs.

“That shows a whole lot about Les Miles dedication to win. When you lose a quality guy like Coach Porter, you need to get quality.” Reese said.” And for Les Miles to hire Frank, it’s proof that Coach Miles understands what he needs to do. Look at Coach Miles’ staffs, he’s had guys who have left him to be head coaches, (Bo) Pelini at Nebraska, Jimbo (Fisher) at Florida State and now Porter at Memphis. Coach Miles hires great coaches.”

Moving from coaching running backs to receivers this season at Tennessee, Johnson said he was impressed by the amount of work Wilson put into being a great receivers coach.

“He enjoyed coaching receivers last year, he went and talked to Curtis Johnson with the Saints and Henry Ellard with the Jets to find out how to be the best receivers coach he can be. He works at being the best every day.” Johnson said.

While it is always talked about having a coach who can relate to the players they are recruiting, having a coach who is from the same part of the world as the players they are recruiting, is an unbeatable combination according to the coaches.

“I can use Frank as a role model to my kids,” Juluke said. “They know Coach Wilson as a member of our community. And now he is at the highest level, working for the premier program in our state.”

Johnson took it a step further, “Me, being the coach at St. Aug, I have a St. Aug graduate walking in to my school to recruit for LSU. That’s huge. I know it wasn’t set up this way, but Tyrann (Mathieu) has a coach on staff now that is from the same place as him. My kids have a guy who understands them, and their situation. That’s going to make it very hard for our kids to go anywhere else.”

Johnson seemed to sum up what all of the coaches were feeling by telling a story from last summer, and the unity that the local coaches have for each other.

“Last year I drove 18 kids 9 hours to Tennessee for their camp. Frank was only recruiting one player, which was Tyrann, but we went there to support Frank. Frank met with all of our players, treated each one like they were the reason he went to work that day. Thank God I don’t have to drive 9 hours anymore!

Part II

quote:

Several local high school coaches applauded the move and said it would be a big plus for LSU recruiting. They remember how he resurrected an ailing O.P. Walker program after getting the head coaching job at the age of 26.

"He's a first class guy and does things the right way, " Belle Chasse Coach Bob Becnel said. "He's real down to earth and knows how to talk to players."

Said Emmanuel Powell, who coached under Wilson at O.P. Walker and succeeded him as coach: "Frank knows football, and he's an excellent teacher. He made everybody believe that no matter what had taken place in the past, things were going to change -- and you could get past adversity. He brought character and discipline to those kids, made them understand that beyond football how to be a young man -- be successful in the community and a productive citizen."

Wilson also made a huge impression on John Curtis Coach J.T. Curtis, who is aiming for his 24th state championship against Evangel on Friday at the Superdome. Wilson's Chargers went toe to toe with Curtis for a couple seasons in district play and lost to the Patriots 16-14 in the 2002 Class 4A state championship game at the Superdome.

Curtis pooh-pooh's the notion that Wilson's value is only that of a recruiter.

"Oh, no! Anybody who watched his teams play would know that is untrue, " Curtis said emphatically. "Without a question he can coach. His teams at Walker executed offensively and defensively as well as any team we've played against.

"I knew even then if he wanted to go into college coaching he'd be really successful because Frank has his heart in the right place. The kids are important to him. He wants to make an impact on their lives as a person and affect them in a positive way in their adulthood."

With LSU in exams before the Tigers' preparations against Penn State for the Capital One Bowl on Jan. 1 in Orlando, Fla., Wilson is pounding the recruiting pavement. He joined the LSU staff officially Tuesday and was in New Orleans on Wednesday, he said, "visiting our commitments and those that don't know yet they will be (LSU) commitments."

One of those might be O.P. Walker junior defensive tackle Anthony Johnson, a leading 2011 recruit who committed to Tennessee months ago. Johnson said he still is committed to the Volunteers but that he's considering LSU more heavily.

"Now that LSU has made that change, they have moved up on my list, but I'm still committed to Tennessee, " Johnson said. "He told me it would be a great opportunity to play in front of the home crowd, and that he's happy being down in Baton Rouge after being away from his family."

Wilson said with Porter coaching through the Capital One Bowl, he's not sure what his responsibilities will be through the rest of the month, other than recruiting. But there's no doubt about his comfort and happiness at his new gig.

"I'm humbled by it and excited for the opportunity to give, to work, for my state school, " he said. "It's great being home."

Mark my words, with the talent in this state next year I predict that Frank Wilson will be named Rivals recruiter of the year if not then at the least be in the top 3.

What needs to be shown besides the comments made by Johnson, Hilliard, Reed, Hill, etc.

And the fact that he recruited a bunch of La kids to Ole Miss that helped them beat us the past two years shows that he can evaluate talent well, which has been a problem at LSU.

I tell you it wasn't just mentioning Ole Piss, McKnight decision came down to Ole Piss/USC. He thought the people recruiting him at LSU were a joke an never seriously considered LSU.

He is a great recruiter but I still think he needs to prove he can recruit on the national stage. As of now I think Porter was a better recruiter because he could snag blue chippers OOS, like in Texas. Wilson hasn't shown he can do that beyond all the insane connections he has in New Orleans particularly. That is ok though, locking down Louisiana and we'll be fine.

Long time, but wasn't it worth it? I don't know about anybody else, but I CAN'T WAIT until some sort of LSU football starts again. I am so hoping that I can get to that Oregon game, and I am even thinking of driving to W Va.

This right here. I think we will just let Frank Wilson lock up the state. Bobby Bowden often says his biggest mistake was when he started to recruit nationally. I think you will see 15 kids a year from La in our classes under Frank Wilson.

Well I think Wilson is MUCH more valuable to the LSU staff because he can lock up Louisiana as well as coach the RB position, something Porter evidently had problems with.
