I think denegrating Carroll's recruiting record is foolish.
I don't think anyone is saying Carroll isn't a good recruiter. But if you say anyone can recruit well at LSU when they are winning, then you have to acknowledge the same for USC. Both programs are very attractive in their regions for different reasons. USC may have more of a national pull, but LSU is very strong in the talent-rich Southeast and we don't need to go that far. If we did, I suspect Les would do as good a job as Petey. Nothing to back it up besides opinion, but he is very well liked by recruits and families.

Although none are loved by LSU fans... I think any reasonable list has Meyer, Carroll, and Saban very close to the top (if not at teh top)

Ohio and Pennsylvania high school football is pretty good and they do well historically in Florida for some reason

And yet....still lose a game every year you have NO business losing.

Orgeron is the king of recruiting shirtless wildboyz.

It has always been my belief that "winning" recruits more than anything. I would have to see how each of these coaches recruit with a losing team. Unfortunately all these great recruiting coaches are usually good enough coaches to win with great recruiting classes. Both variables (winning and recruiting) are synergistic with the other. Couple that to varied evaluations of talent from multiple sources and it gets hard to delineate who is actually better. Every coach mentioned thus far has certain things that help them in recruiting.
They are all great recruiters, its hard to say without a doubt which is the best because evaluations of talent are so varied among different sources. Obviously some kids are overrated and some underrated. Generally 5 star kids are the best of the best. But recruiting a 3 star 1st round draft pick says a great deal about talent evaluation than a 5 star who drops out. I dont mean to make this a "stars matter" debate but I think you get the jest of the argument.

Nick hasn't shown he can do it consistently at the same school like Pete has. Not saying Nick can't he just hasn't proved himself over a long period of time.

I think one man who should get some recognition is Doc Holliday...im not sure where he is now but i know he was the top recruiter at schools like west virginia(jerry porter, amous zeroue) and nc state(phillip rivers, koren robinson) and was able to get some big time prospects at places that were'nt nationally popular...he was most recently at florida where im pretty sure he does a bulk of the recruiting...not sure if hes still there though, may have gone back to west virginia

A lot of the posters in this thread have had good arguments for their guy, and I have to agree that the difference between the top 5 recruiters is subtle, but it appears (I don't see him do his thing) that Saban just flat out-works the other guys.
The "Saban Rule" was a really lame piece of legislation. Looks like all the other coaches want time off without worrying about Saban out there working. He's a friggin machine that never stops. Worth every penny. Underpaid maybe.
I hear that the majority of our staff turnover is due to the fact that they don't want to work that hard. They just want a year under him on their resume.

not true at all, lane kiffin and his staff work just as hard, bob stoops, urban meyer, butch davis all do as well. you are giving saban too much credit. imo there is no "king of football recruiting" but there are a bunch of great recruiters.

I like you, but I am pretty sure that it's because he's a dick.
