Carroll is the best recruiter, but one of the worst game day coaches. How can you have that many 1st round picks on your roster and not have more than ONE BCS NC?

Saban is good. He's not as good as Miles though. Because he recruits trash, and Miles gets just as much talent, but no character trash. Saban will recruit anything with 2 or 3 legs.
Saban's recruiting glory days will be short lived at Bama. He had a free ride the last couple of years by being able to poor mouth his talent and getting zero pressure in the state from Auburn and Tenn, who typically recruit Bama very hard. Those coaching staffs now can flat out recruit, and will pull down Bama's talent level.
Kiss your top five classes good-bye. Saban was nothing but a victim of circumstances the last couple of years at Bama and had it easy recruiting at LSU, which everyone does.
Bama will be back in the middle of the pack again, because they haven't prooved thay can stay at the top without cheating. The historical recruiting pressure in that area will return to normal going forward.

What did Saban do at Michigan St? Amazing what the talent of Louisiana will do for a coach's ability. Saban goes to Bama and they have two of the best years EVER with instate talent.

Not to bash SC...but they also have HOLLYWOOD to assist w/ the recruiting thing.
Don't think this doesn't sway young men who like that lifestyle and publicity.....

I hate to say it, but NOBODY outworks Saban when it comes to recruiting... or running a program for that matter. Couple that with his solid eye for talent, and I would not jump off a building if he were still at LSU. His only negative, that I can see, is that he has a very difficult time not pissing off his assistant coaches. I think most of them don't have his work ethic, which ticks him off, but the fact remains... He is always looking for new assistants.
As for Miles, I'm happy with him at LSU. He reminds me of a Paterno, or a pre-senile Bowden. Just different approaches, but both successful.

I think discounting what Carroll has done at USC is just dumb. When he got to USC, they were in a slump and pretty much on par with everyone else in the PAC-10 and the better teams in the WAC. He wasn't exactly handed the entire west coast. He had to build it up.
As impressive as the FL programs are, the equivalent here would be if one of them came in and locked down the southern half of the eastern seaboard. No one is even close.
For now, it's certainly Carroll No disrespect to Mack Brown, but he hasn't exactly locked down Texas yet. Second (and VERY close) would be Saban for what he did here and what he's doing at Bama.

I would say let's have them all arm wrestle for the title, but Saban isn't big enough.

I think the best recruiter is the guy at a traditionally strong program, with strong, uh "booster support", and who has ALOT of early playing time to offer/promise.
I may give Carroll the nod because he signed a gadzillion top class RBs in the same year, and still top class guys even witha very deep depth chart at most positions, but he does have an advantage in LA and quite frankly can just offer something different. When all the big SEC guys are going after a player, they basically all offer variations on a theme. USC automatically stands out just because it is a different lifestyle.
I think the reason why you see guys like Meyer, Saban, and now the Kiffin crew get off to such fast recruiting starts was because they all had a TON of early playing time to offer. Saban, especially is not afraid to jettison deadweight in the upperclassmen to make room for bigger recruiting classes.

Pete Carroll is #1 without a doubt. My "damn good argument"..? The sheer number of five star guys he hauls in every single year, no matter the depth at the position.

Funny how all of these coaches are in the richest states as far as recruits go...If you want to discuss the real King, do it with a coach/school that actually has to work for recruits

How many 5 stars are there in CA every year?

Miles, Saban, and Carrol pull alot of out-of-state talent.

That argument would be valid if he was just pulling them from California, but he's grabbing guys from all across the country, plus he's in the final 2-3 choices for probably twice as many 5 stars as he ends up with.

I'm not arguing anything but you can't deny that he's got people sitting in his backyard (just like we do) that wanna go to USC and he doesn't even need to get on a plane.
Serious question:
of the 5 stars that he has pulled in lately.......how many from outside CA
