re: Your Thoughts On This Years Recruiting So Far?

I think it's been great so far. Few questions; very, very perplexed about the Storm thing. If he's still taking other visits then he's not a firm commit. And if he is a firm commit, then why not a sealed-deal?
For my part, I am not troubled by the Blackmon offer. If our coaches can't discern talent when it's runnig back-n-forth in front of their eyes then they should find another vocation.
There will probably be a defection or two before NSD and a few pleasant surprises to offset them. Seems like that's the way these kind of things go.

the current emphasis on early commitments only amplifys the "crap shoot" nature of talent evalution and schollie offers. basically, you lose a year of evaluation. since these young men are still maturing physically, i think the standard deviation is larger. however, the coaches are much better than the amateurs (the rating services, rantards, etc) so we are seeing quite an increase in "sleepers". there are too many players for these services to properly evaluate them all. short cuts are taken. having said all that, i like our current class and am hopeful that Miles and staff have done a great and accurate job of their eval.s. only time will tell.

personally, i beleive this class will be comparable to the 2007 class. one or two elite players, and the rest a solid foundation to continue success. depending on how we finish out, even the star watchers wouldn't be too disappointed when a couple of those three stars pop up to fours starts after their senior year.

Well, in looking at what these "sleepers" have in common, they are defensive guys. Even though Tyler isn't a "sleeper" anymore, I'll include him, as he was somewhat of an unknown before LSU offered him. It appears that Chavis and Cooper are looking for guys that could fit ideally into what they want to do defensively. That's a good thing. LSU will get its share of the big names, but I think its good to not overlook the importance of adding "your type" of players.
That being said, I think LSU still picks up a couple of 5 stars. I won't be disappointed if LSU doesn't sign Lache, but I think he'll be an LSU Tiger come February. Also, I think a surprise 5 star defensive commit isn't completely out of the realm of possibility.
Anything close to a top 5 class would be an overachievement for 2010 IMO, so I'm very happy so far. I believe that the puzzling offers and the Storm deal will begin to make sense in October/November as we learn more about those guys and get a better feel for what the new defensive staff wants to do.

Texas, naturally, is No. 1.
You have to laugh at the way they couldn't be complimentary of another school without being pompous to offset it.

I like this years class, but love last years. I'd like to see what this team is capable of in the next 3 years.
I think LSU is going to be a runaway train for the next several seasons.

This year is the first time I've really questioned recruits that are commits so far.
Your right...I mean look at all the lousy 3*s Miles has picked up since coming to LSU:
Brandon Lafell
Ciron Black
Trindon Holliday
Tim Molton
This guy Miles clearly has no eye for talent and we should run his arse out of town before he wrecks the ship Saban finally righted!!!

excellent point and an excellent post. my only concern with chavis is he, so say, doesn't use nickle or dime packages as he leaves his LB's in on 3rd and long. if that is true (not saying it is, just heard it several times), our LB's better be fast and good pass defenders. this spread stuff makes you cover a lot of guys.

Very true. Speed at the linebacker positions has been important in the SEC for a long time, even more so now with the spread. I suppose there are ways to draw up a defense, utilizing the secondary if compensation is needed, but then you leave yourself open to the deep threat, which OCs still like to test you with from time to time. How sweet would it be to add a Jordan Hicks to this class. I know that we have no chance with that kid, but just thinking of an example.

Recruiting has gone really well if you look at the class as a whole. But if you assume Maclin is a DE (and maybe Mingo from last year) then the LB group leaves "a lot" to be desired.
we don't have a top not weak side backer in last year or this year class so far. of the top 7 or 8 players in 2011 none is weak side LB.
we need a top notch one bad this year. do whatever you can to get Shaun Lewis. I know the train may have left on this idea but offer Hurd if you have to.

i think it ends up being a top 10 class

Still a long way to NSD, but having so many needs already covered leaves just a few guys (Reed, Lache, Dickson) with decisions to make- and it is a huge advantage for our staff to be able to start on the 2011 guys. I think that Simon will play DB and will be the biggest surprise from this class. This class is solid, and this staff seems to know much more about the players than any recruiting site!

I think it' heavy on quality players, but it doesn't really have any superstars at this point..and that's okay.
I don't want to downplay it and call it a filler class, either, that's just there for depth because there are guys in there that will be impact players.
It's just a very solid, sound class with a few spots left to cherry pick guys for, and you can't go wrong with that.

I think that is why Coleman was moved to LB. Chavis also has a tendency to play slightly smaller speedier LB. In my opinion to offset the spread, this is the right strategy.
