Welcome to the jungle...don't worry about asking a question that some may deem "stupid". We all ask stupid questions sometimes and generally get stupid answers in return.
I do agree with you on the rushing yards issue. It is ludicrous for a back like Charles Scott not to have a 100-yard rushing game yet. And if we don't work out the kinks in our rushing game real soon it will bite us in the rear.

welcome to the board! you have, of course, nailed our #1 problem on offense. you can book it the coaches have known about this from day one. it appears that we are just now accepting it and running plays that work w/o a great run blocking OL. i don't blame our staff for trying so hard to make it work because running the football successfully is highly desirable, esp the later the year gets.

Nick Saban is pissing his pants after watching the passing game LSU displayed. And we just scratched the surface. JJ has great velocity with pro WR's to throw to. Pass until you wear out the db's. The word is out... stacking the box against LSU might not be the best thing.

This... They take some guys out of the box respecting JJ pass game and Scott should have a nice day.

'RISHING"?
'RISHING"?

Its like "rushing" except your RBs fall forward fishing for yards, so it is "rishing" FWIW

Just curious - what would be enough?
4.0? 3.9? 4.6?
Also - shouldn't you factor the sack-loss yards out of your analysis? QB rushing stats, and team rushing stats are always scewed down because sacks count against rushing yardage. What does that tell us?
Further - what does it tell us when the other team loads the box play after play after play, daring JJ / JL to beat them over the top (which LSU did against AU, finally)? Having to play only 7 in the box instead of 8, which Tulane and UAT will have to think about doing, opens creases and may just help open up running lanes.
The rushing game may be flawed, but it is effective and in the Tigers last two SEC wins it produced Touchdowns late in the games which is all that matters.
No team in the nation thinks it is getting enough YPC. Ask this though -- is the rushing game producing points and positive outcomes at critical junctures in the games? LSU can answer yes, a majority of the time but still working toward more dominance.
The best medicine for LSU's run game is the healthy pass game and points scored.

After all that logical analysis I shall sum up the Rant's replies.
- What if you discount Shep's run
- We don't have a running game still
- Bama will murder our running game
- Saban will skullfrick us while simultaneously masterminding a theft of the Royal Jewels from the Tower.

We will have to get the passing game going quick against Bama and make them back off the line. But,I would imagine they are going to force us to run the ball. That being said, the OL has to step up and play a lot better. I think Shepards speed suits our running game better than CS or KW's power. Might need to put TH behind CS.

Sometimes, but looking at the running game without the one huge play is significant, wouldn't you agree? If LSU scores 40 points is every game vs 0 points in 11 games and 480 in one game then they have the same average but with much different results. Lots of stats throw out the most extreme sample at each end.
the problem is, you are looking at those stats to compare to other teams. are you taking away their big run too? or is it just LSU that gets a "lucky" run?

The running game :/
Lets take out RS's score;
31 rushes for 53 yards...avg of less than 2 ypc
Against a less than impressive Auburn defense..
uhhh does the concept of "they took away the run game and played quarters in the secondary so we took advantage of what they were giving us" mean anything to you?

This is precisely the point!
Statistics can be scewed by so many factors.
What would you rather have -- a team that is 6 -1 or one (like Hawaii for all those years) that is 3 - 4 but leads the nation in Yards Per Game?
The teams in the SEC are good -- Auburn's guys knew that to beat LSU there season would be turned around. If you are Chizik what do you do -- I think I might have said, "Hey AU, let's do everything we can to stop 32 and 5. Make 9, 80, and 1 beat us."
That is what happened as I watch the game on DVR.
There are no apples to apples in football. Example: I wonder what Miss State's Yards-Per-Interception return stat is this morning? And, does it matter? Is 13 on MSU a great player because Tebow gave him a once in a lifetime gift? Is he just lucky?
I am over statistics. They don't tell you as much as most people think they do.
Just score touchdowns and one LSU fan in NC will be happy. That is the only offensive statitic that matters.

with that mindset...lets take away FLA's 13 points and we are undefeated...

We simply had no running game against Auburn Saturday night and its only going to be more difficult to run the ball between the tackles against Bama. This is a real concern knowing Saban will not hesitate to bring it at JJ. We have to establish the run otherwise JJ will feel the heat all game long.
Saban will blitz and that's good imo b/c we know he will. LSU will make the gumps pay with screens to KW or quick throws to Richard Dickson (Lord LSU has some talent), which will open up the run. I say let em blitz... it's gonna be fun. Plus we might consider throwing it long. My prediction: LSU 31 Bama 17

alright
guess im the only pessimistic dumbass in all of tiger nation who is mildly concerned about our running game...
i shall roll into the fetal position, stay there for the rest of the season because i deserve it for being such an ignorant a-hole

Have you watched Alabama play? They can't throw the ball. So it should be a push. Low scoring, physical, team that makes the least amount of turnovers should win.
Posted on 10/26/09 at 11:30 am to rickyh
Bingo.
That 31 - 17 number is way too high unless there are a boat load of turnovers.

quote:How did you read part of my post and miss the rest of it? That was mentioned because the people saying you can't judge certain aspects of the running game without looking at the entire running game would probably be arguing that LSU is averaging 40 pts per game and it is the best offense in school history.
the problem is, you are looking at those stats to compare to other teams. are you taking away their big run too? or is it just LSU that gets a "lucky" run?
A consistent running game that averages 5ypc is MUCH better than a sporadic on that averages 5ypc.
You can't judge averages by dropping extreme samples, but you can't judge consistency while keeping them. We saw that in the running game in 2007 when Hester averaged less than 5ypc yet we still had a very good running game. The ability to control the clock, wear down the defense, pickup first downs, and ultimately outscore your opponent is determined primarily by a consistent running game, NOT one that can hit an occasional homerun.
