Well, for a while I was the only person in the department who was focusing on modern European history. A few new grad students have come in and have focused on it and they actually have a modern European history reading list now. It is largely a "War and Society" department, however.

gmorgan, you went to USM for grad school or undergrad.
bayou, if you're thinking about grad school for european history I can get ahold of my contact who is currently working on his ph.d. for American history there. He can give me a full report for you.
Should be able to have that in less than a week
Most of what I know is about the American stuff. You interested?

William Carey University as an undergrad; Southern Miss as a grad student

Dr. Wiest and Neiberg (who is going on a two-year teaching job in Pennsylvania but will be back) can teach modern European history but they do focus a lot on War and Society. They are both very successful historians, though.

how are the faculty there? If i contacted one of them could i go up there for a visit with no problem?
Posted on 4/21/10 at 9:31 pm to bayoubengals88
I have never had a problem meeting with them as long as I called a week or two in advance. There are some pretty accomplished historians there and some younger ones. I guess just like a lot of other history departments.

Mind if I ask why you're not interested in LSU for graduate study? We actually have some really strong faculty for what you're interested in.
I'll see what I can dig up from the grad student community at USM. Hows that sound?

Well, for about 15 more days, I attend C.E. Byrd high school.
Could you tell?

why im not interested in LSU
well im about to get my undergrad at Southeastern and I talked to the grad coordinator for history there about LSU. First off i wanna get out of state.
he said that was a good idea because LSU accepts very few SELU students. 4.0 type students with great GRE scores is about all they would look at, and i dont have a 4.0

I think I had about a 3.7 as an undergrad when I applied to Southern Miss for grad school. So, I guess 4.0 isn't a necessity.

I'll get back to ya. What's your email?

That's a good reason to go.

No offense and I don't mean to call him a liar but I don't believe that for a second. I was a 3.6 student and I'm here. I know of a couple of Southeastern people to come through the department.
I'm not trying to talk you into LSU but I just want you to be as informed as possible so you can make the choice. I don't know what his motives are for stearing you clear of LSU but I'd be a bit weary of that knowing what I know.

Yeah, I know a couple other William Carey students there, so I guess they don't look down on it too much.

Mainieri told Edward after his third AB that if his coach had given him a chance to start, he wouldn't take the first pitch on his first three plate appearances. Fourth AB ... first-pitch double!
Posted on 4/21/10 at 9:43 pm to OldIowaTiger
he wasnt really steering me away. he did mention 2 students that got in LSU from southeastern... but my gpa is only 2.6 due to math. thats not gonna fly. Though ive never made anything less than an A in any upper level history... kindve a tough situation im in.
