Was Rehage a safety?
If he was he deserves consideration. That dude played with a reckless abandon that I'd never seen before and have not seen since.

Simple-the only safety to have his number retired at LSU. After that Laron Landry.

For us old timers, Tommy Casanova was the most dynamic safety, and one of the best overall athletes ever to grace the field at Tiger Stadium.
Tommy Casanova was a great safety in the pros but he played corner while at LSU:

He is definitely a freak athlete. But he was a liability in coverage. That isn't top safety material. Sure he can hit hard and he was good in run support. I just think cover and ball skills are more important.
A liability in coverage? Let me guess, you think it was Jack Hunt and Jesse Daniels locking up the deep field on those defenses. You are projecting his NFL rap on his college days. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I would say Jack Hunt. He was a walk on and developed into a great safety.........
You sure about that? I thought he came in as a scholarship WR and converted to Safety under Saban?

Everyone forgot about Johnny Robinson who played halfback on offense and safety on defense....1958 and 1959 seasons. Went on to make pro bowl many times with the KC chiefs.

I would go with Laron as well out of the one I was able to watch, so I am not sure about Casanova. Although Steltz was prolly my favorite

Chad Jones had that amazing game where he pretty much single handedly won the game vs miss state but id have to give it to either landry or steltz. I have never felt worse for a player than i did for steltz when he got injured vs OSU

For those readers too young to remember him, Tommy Casanova was the best DB and athlete LSU football ever had. He was a 3 time All-American (the only LSU football player to achieve this--He wasn't eligible to play varsity ball as a freshman), and one of the last two true 2-way players in NCAA Div 1 football (the other player was Leroy Keyes at Purdue, I believe). Casanova was the best running back Coach Mac had, but he was also the best DB. Since he was more valuable to the defense, he played the majority of the time there.
I know the question was the best safety to play at LSU, but since Casanova played safety in the pros, I think it's appropriate to include him here. If you'd like to see how good he was, try to get video of the 1970 Ole Miss game, or just ask Archie Manning!

msbargas, thanks for the clip on Casanova.

After watching him return kicks, I also think that PP7 would have been our best RB and WR his junior year.

Here are some highlights from that 1970 game. TC37 has one of his punt returns toward the end.

Thanks for the video! I was a high school junior watching the game on ABC Saturday night football with Chris Schenkle calling the plays. We were all going crazy! Small victory for losing to Archie in 1968 and 1969, though. Those were the only 2 years that Mac beat the Bear. We could have won the SEC and maybe more.
