f so, sounds like you've never had you arse handed to you by a coach.....
arse chewing can be effective if used on the right kids; some it will backfire with. Whether the coach is using an in your face style or father figure or whatever type of style, it doesn't mean shite if the coach doesn't follow it up with effective mentoring. i.e., this is what you did but this is how it needs to be done and why.

The coaching staff has the want to be passionate!

If it makes you feel any better, Brick Haley dog cussed the purple defensive line after the first touchdown drive.

a good coach knows that there is a time for arse-chewing and a time for private scolding.
Emmitt Smith is a good example of a guy who never responded well to public tongue lashings.

Whether I have or have not experienced it doesn't give me any more or less credibility than your experiencing it gives you. "Oh my coach made me feel small" or "I blocked the right guy because I didn't want to get berated" is small time.
In my opinion great players do what they do because they are their greatest critique and realize that everyone needs coaching.
Great coaches know which buttons to press and when to press them. How they press those buttons varies from person to person. One of the best coaches I have ever seen in action didn't raise his voice above a whisper in practice (basketball example but it applies) but his players knew that when he spoke you listened then acted accordingly.
And to my original point, there is a reason that Saban constantly talks about "the process" and not his ability to motivate. Players listen to him because they know that he can put them in position for success. . .with success you can put up with the occasional "going off moment". It wears thin when there isn't success. . .ask Mangino.

I did not coach or play football, but was in charge of a large number of people for a number of years. The same approach does not work with everyone, one just has to be smart enough to know how to handle may different personalities. I have found that most will do what they are held accountable for if they are properly taught-----therein lies the two weaknesses with the "Tigers" IMHO.

True Story - I was a big lazy kid but played BREC football since I was like five.
By the time I was 13 I was pretty good but still Lazy. I was playing for the Broadmoor Bucs. My lazy buddy and I were hanging around the bench not paying attention and my coach-who never yelled or cussed at anybody--called for D and we didn't come, we both were D Line (I was the nose tackle), and the coach tore us up. He called me a lazy son of ..... and told us if we didn't go out a break that QB's leg he was going to have us running wind sprints until we died.
We got pumped and on the next possession we actually broke the QB's leg. (I hit high, he hit low)
The coach was a little embarrassed-as he obviously didn't mean that part literally but that was a turning point for me and I became a pretty darn good player (not lazy) from then on.
We won that game, which was a play-off game and then we won the TFT Bowl (City Championship).
I played HS in Mississippi but I was a headhunter from that point on.
Point - Sometimes coaches change their style to get to the player in question.
Les knows he needs a QB like CNN needs viewers, he's got the materials and I'm confident he'll shape it into what we need.
Just be patient.

Right, and you have to pick your spots. I played baseball for a guy that would have made Nick Saban blush, and as a 15-year-old it took us about a month to become completely immune to his tongue-lashings. We would laugh about it after he got through. And never once did I field a groundball any better out of fear of an arse chewing. He was actually a very good coach, but it was because he knew a shite-ton about baseball and was a great teacher, not because he dog cussed us every couple of innings. Which is why Saban is also a great coach, because he knows a shite-ton about football and is a great teacher. Has almost nothing to do with him losing his shite on guys.

You retards crack me up.
Suffice to say that it probably does more for the team than you give it credit for.
I have a theory that people that believe arse chewing doesn't work are one of two things:
1.Someone who has never played ball and has no idea what they are talking about
2.Someone who got chewed out previously in high school or such and instead of being a man and taking it, ran to their momma and complained like a pussy.
Either way, statements like this are retarded.
I have been saying this for months. Why was 2007 special? Cause we had someone who was willing to put a foot up a 20 year olds arse in Pelini. We haven't had that for two years. Lazy college guys need someone to get in their face and challenge them. All those guys that need a fatherly figure can go to freaking Ole Miss. We need men on the team, not some crybabies.
just my opinion.

Yeah, Urban really looks like the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket when he is kissing and hugging Tebow.
While I don't have a generalized theory for everyone that has a "scream at me fetish" I will venture to say that some of them fall into the following category: They "played ball" and never had any aspirations of or venues for playing after high school. Reflecting on those high school experiences is more akin to romanticizing time they either wish they could get back or see as integral in what they have become. Aware of their shortcomings then they cling to the knowledge that at least they "took it like a man".
While there is nothing wrong with being in that category, the member's tend to loose objectivity. Correlation often equals causation until the carpet doesn't match the drapes. Screaming geniuses can become maniacal fools overnight. It's all contextual. Go back and look at the numbers the defense gave up at the end of 2007. Who cares what Pellini was willing to do with his foot. . .

No shite, he's come way closer to making out with Tebow than getting in his face and yelling at him.

Who's Chevis?
..and if you run an improper route, I expect you to get chewed out especially during a game. Practice is different.

Actually yes...it is completely coincedental. The biggest hippie coach on the planet, Pete Carrol, seemed to do just fine.

- coaches who overly scream at everything, but get no respect....Curley Hallman
- coaches who absolutely, positively cannot stand mental breakdowns....Saban, Gonzales, Muschamp
- coaches who are soft, players friends type coaches who don't want to hurt a kid's feelings....Miles, Archer

agree fully. there is a time and a place to explode and bring the hammer down on a player. i heard stories that towards the end of his lsu stent, that many of the players began to take issue with saban's frequent public beratings.there are appropriate times to whip someone into shape with "death threats" and vulgarity. stupid penalties and missed assignments at crucial points come to mind. there is also a time to gain attention with a stern voice, eye contact and specific instruction. a coach needs to keep in mind that these kids come from different backgrounds and each will respond in a specific way. many factos predispose a player to react to a particular type of teaching discipline. many come from broken homes, have not had to work hard throughout their career because of advanced physical growth and development. some have been coddled their whole life, in spite of disciplinay problems and poor work ethic.for some of these players, this may be the only form of parenting they receive prior to becoming "real" adults. that being said, this team does need a new edge and added fire. its time to work on the mental game of these kids. we have the athleticism, now we need to develop the hunger, edge and desire.

When you get your face mask snatched by a coach on Natl. Tv.,
If you have to rely on mask snatching, you are either not much of a teacher/coach or just a jerk drunk on a power trip.
Getting in a guy's face is one thing, but jerking him around by the mask is just an example of an emotional coach with limited motivational/teaching skills.
